WEST VIRGINIA POST MORTEMS
Just a few last remarks about the West Virginia game
and then we’ll bury it forever:
Rip Engle, attributed the loss to the Mountaineers to
three things—too many fumbles, the loss of Bill Straub,
and, of course, an extra-good West Virginia team.
Engle had plenty to say about the West Virginians—the
team that edged his Lions 20-19 at Beaver Field last year
“West Virginia was much sharp-'
er this year than they were when
they beat us last season,” he said.
Last year it was a case of doing
everything right and losing while
this year the Lions made some
costly mistakes'
Fumbles, for instance, cut
deeply into the Lion offensive
game. Three bobbles in the
third period stymied Lion drives
when it hurt. But two of these
—on the optional play—might
be better attributed to alert
West Virginia defensive play.

The West Virginia line (210
pounds per man) was easily the
best faced by the Lions this year.
Again, as last year, it was tackle
Bruce Bosley who led the charge.
The big junior was (immovable
on defense and gave Don Bailey
a good chase every time he went
back to pass.
Bailey incidentally, threw his
third touchdown pass of the
. season when he hit Ron Younk
er on -the' 10-yard line late in
the second period, which brings
us to Jesse Arnelle:
The big Lion end paved the way
for Younker on that play with a
solid block : on halfback Bobby
Moss who was moving in for the
tackle. Jesse has been more ag
gressive on defense this year than
we’ve ever seen him before, and
is playing the same flawless of
fensive game he played two years
■ago as a-sophomore.

Lenny Moore continues to
strengthen his strong bid for an
all-American berth with each
week of play. The Flash added
another 131 yards to his rushing
total against - the Mountaineers,
bringing the figure up to 465 in
four games. His eight yard touch
down run was his fifth.
What may be more important,
he saved three touchdowns him
self Saturday, breaking up one
TD pass and making two goal
line tackles.
As a team the Lions have piled
up 1199 yards to 859 for the op
position. They’ve averaged five
yards per play. On the darker
side, they’ve fumbled 15 times
and 12 of these were recovered
by opposing forces.

TCU Post Wins
It’s getting to be almost a rule
that just two of Penn State’s fu
ture football opponents should
win weekend games. This time it
was Texas Christian and Pitt
which came out on top. Rutgers,
Holy Cross, and Penn remained
.winless on the season.
Pitt’s Panthers pulled the ma
jor upset of the day, upending
Navy, 21-19. Sophomore Corny
Salveterra scored twice and Hen
ry Ford once.
In'another game where the ex
tra-point meant a lot, Texas
Christian nipped Texas & M,
21-2 C. Quarterback Ronnie Clink
scale scored on a keep-play from
three yards out for the initial
tally. The Aggies made things hot
for the Horned Frogs in the last
period, scoring their third touch
down with but-90 second* left in
the game.
An 86-yard kickoff return by A 1
Grieco and a 77-yard touchdown
run by Jack Yohe gave William &
Mary a 14-7 win over Rutgers Sat
urday.
Marquette did all its scoring in
the final quarter to defeat Holy
Cross, 19-14. Two of these mark
ers were registered by Bob Ger
man on plunges from the one
yard line;
Richie Gaskell, an All-Southern
Conference end last year, ran an
intercepted forward pass 84 yards
for a touchdown and took a 37-
yard heave for another to lead
George Washington to a 32-27 vic
tory over Penn.
