PAGE SIXTEEN Harriers Lose 'Fearless' Trio Chick Werner, Penn State cross-country coach, will have a hard time fielding a squad comparable to last year’s un- beaten harriers The Lions’ “Triple-Trouble-Trio”, of Red Hollen, Lamont Smith, and Doug Moorhead will not be intact this season, Moorhead being the only returnee of the triumvirate. This fearless threesome paced the Lions to three dual meet wins, a victory in a triangular battle, and to third and fourth places in the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletics of America and National Collegiate Athletic Association championships. In only one regular season meet did the Trio fail to finish one two-three. That was against Mich igan State when Moorhead dropped to fourth. Besides Moorhead, Werner will be counting on help from Jim Hamill, John Chillrud,. and Ted Garrett. These three harriers picked up some valuable points for the Blue and White last sea son. All have plenty of exper ience and any one could turn into a real standout The top freshman distance run ner last year, Paul Roberts, should prove to be a big help. Other run ners from last year’s team who will be back this fall include Skip Slocum, Dan Sutter, Jim Pastor ius, and the Justin brothers, Don and Bruce. Last season’s hill-and-dalers triumphed over Cornell in the first meet. The Lions beat Navy and Georgetown in a three-way battle, and then nipped Michigan State, the reigning IC4A and NCAA titlists at the time. Man hattan wasn’t as tough as had been figured, and the .Wernermen romped, 17-41, for an unblemished record. This year the Lions have a team that could prove to be well bal anced, with Moorhead leading the pack and Hamill, Garrett, Chill rod and Roberts filling in the other four slots. This may not be the way things work out, but these five should prove to be the nmdeoos of a good team.
