4th Seminar

The privileges and responsibil
ities of newspapers in reporting
law enforcement events will be
discussed at the fourth annual
seminar for newspapermen at the
University today and tomorrow.
R. Wallace Brewster, professor
and head of the Department of
Political Science, will be chair
man of the seminar which is
sponsored by the Pennsylvania
Society of Newspaper Editors and
the University.
Among the speakers at th e
seminar will be Wayland H. Els
bree, editor of the Philadelphia
Legal Intelligencer, who will talk
on the question: which records
are public and which are priv
ileged? William M. Smith Jr., pro
fessor of family relationships, will
speak on sex crime stories; Wil
liam F. Achatz. photography edi
tor of the Philadelphia associat
ed press, will speak on news pho
tographers and their problems in
courts.
Dinner speakers will be Jeffer
son B. Fordham, dean of the Uni
versity of Pennsylvania La w
School; and Mason W. Gross, Rut
gers University provost.
The Statue of Liberty is made

Operating expenses for the pro
gram amounted to $965.55. A bal
ance of $235.56 will be left for
operating expenses until the new
drive gets underway next year.
Most of the same charity groups
will be continued next year, Smith
said. Besides the UCA other
changes in the allocations will be
the deletion of one of the cancer
groups and the addition of the
National Scholarship for Negro
Study. Contributions will be col
lected in cash again next year,
Smith. said.

McCollum Is a Professional
John McCollum, tenor, has been
singing professionally since 1950,
when he won an Atwater Kent
Auditions award in Los Angeles.
In opera and oratorio, he has had
leading - tenor roles with. the New
York Philharmonic, the Boston
Symphony, and many other music
groups. In May. 1952, he won the
American Theatre Wing concert
award and was presented in a de
but recital at New York's Town
Hall. He has been appearing since
then under the auspices of the
Community Concert Association.
The choir and soloists will be
accompanied by members of the
University Symphony Orchestra,
under the direction of Theodore
K. Karhan, associate professor of
music and music education, and
