Library Open House
o Feature 3 Tours
The Open House and Penn State Ambassador Tour of the Uni
versity Library from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow will offer visitors a be
hind the scenes look at library administration.
The Open House will feature three guided tours, special exhibits
and two new sound, color films.
Ever since October 1953 when
the periodical department moved
into the new west wing on the
second floor, various other depart
ments of the library have been re
arranged and expanded. The new
wing has allowed the expansion of
exisiting departments and pro
vided new space for reading rooms
and study desks.
To Examine Microfilms
Visitors to the Open House may
examine the library's reading ma
chines. A microfilm reading ma
chine is used to view printed ma
terial on 35 mm film. The film re
cords books, newspapers, maga
zines, typed theses and manu
scripts. The microfilming's chief
advantage is the saving of storage
space. A 112-year file of the New
York Herald-Tribune on micro
film occupies as much space as
two years' bound newsprint vol
umes.
On the first floor, two large
new reading rooms open off the
open shelf room and provide over
200 extra study spaces. An auto
matic book conveyor and a pneu
matic tube system facilitate re
quests for books which must be

On the second floor the new
wing houses two large' reading
rooms on either side of the public
card catalogue. The old circula
tion desk near the catalogue is
being supplanted with an infor
mation desk where trained librar
ians will be on hand to assist stu
dents. Also on the second floor
are the periodical, reference, and
technical processes departments.
Visual Aids Demonstration
An Inspect=o-Film machine and
a tape-duplicating machine will
be demonstrated by the Audio-
Visual Aids Library which has
expanded to
. cover two-thirds of
the ground floor. By detecting ex
cessive scratches, "Scotch-tape"
mending, and damage to sprocket
holes in film, the Inspect-O-Film
helps eliminate small defects be
fore they become large. In addi
tion, this mechanical-electronic
device greatly increases the speed
of film inspection. Campus and
extension groups and schools and
organizations in the State have ac
cess to the facilities of the Audio-
Visual Aids Library, which now
boasts 3200 films.
