Jan Cronstedt To Defend Titles Arnelle Selected For All-State Team Jesse Arnelle, high scoring Lion center, was named yester day to the Associated Pr es s Pennsylvania All - Collegiate basketball team. Arnelle's se lection marked the third con secutive year that he has been selected by the wire service. Captain Jack Sherry also was honored. Sherry, the Nittany number two scorer, was given honorable mention on the squad. Duquesne University domin ated the selections, made by sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the st at e. The crowd was the largest to see an exhibition game in this city. The Braves belted Steve Kraly, slim young lefthander, for eight hits and six runs in three innings and continued against Al Cicotte and Mark Freeman. The entire field of contestants will vie in tomorrow's action which will get under way at 2 p.m. Competition will be seen in the six regular EIGA events, tumbling. rope climb, side horse, horizontal bar, parallel bars, and the flying rings. In order to be eligible for the Eastern all-around title, the gymnasts must compete in the latter four events. Lions 'Onek to Stop' The Nittany Lions competing in the meet will undoubtedly be looked on as the 'ones to stop' for as as a team they ay.; sporting a 15 meet intercollegiate winning streak. six of which came during their undefeated past campaign. The undefeated season enabled them to capture the EIGA , crown for the second consecutive year. Defending all-around champion Jan Cronstedt, Tony Procopio. and Karl Schwenzfeier will lead the Nittanies in their quest to attain individual laurels. Right on their heels will be Co- Captains Frank and Al Wick, Bob Lawrence, Skeets Haag. Dick Spiese, John Baffa, Bill Paxton, Paul Heim, Leroy Fritch, and Hugh Cline. Cronstedt, a FinniSh native, last year won Eastern and National titles in the all-around competition and also on the parallel bars. He has spearheaded the Lions in their past two campaigns with his bril liant routines on the parallels. H bar, and on the mats. In addition to defending his title on the twin bars, he will perform in the Olym pic all-arounds, and on the H-bar in the EIGA individual events. Along with Cronstedt, Schwenz feier and Procopio will enter in the Olympic competition. The duo will also vie for honors in the EIGA all-arounds, and on the rings in tomorrow's individual ac tion. Lawtence Defends Title Lawrence is the defending East ern champ on the horse, and bar ring a mishap in his routine; is, ex pected to retain the title. Frank Wick will also show nis wares on the horse, along with Heim. Al Wick is in contention for high honors on the parallels, while Flaag is expected to find competi- centerfield wall trying to field an inside-the-park homer by Bob Hazle of the Reds in the fifth inning. Three Lions Harry (Pappy) Papacharalambous, 125 - pounds, Ron Smith, 139-pounds, and Frank Breidor, 165-pounds will enter the first-round . eliminations to night. DeMay, Martin Out Smith, a sophomore who fought and lost his only bout of the sea son at Army last week, replaced Don Martin, the Lions' regular 139-pounder, who is scholastically ineligible. No entry for Penn State was made in the 156-pound class. Don DeMay, the Lions' scrappy 156-pound sophomore, did not ac company the team. He suffered a broken nose at Army last week. Grice Whitely and Smith will meet tonight in the first-round eliminations. Virginia's Whitely lost to Martin, 29-27, this season. Pappy will face Frank Guelli, Syracuse, tonight. Guelli, a classy ringman, defeated the Lions' Dick Evanko. 30-25. Breidor Meets Champ Penn State's biggest barrier to jump in the first round will be in the 165-pound bout. Breidor will face Vince Rigolosi, Syracuse co-captain and Eastern champ last year. Rigolosi dumped Breidor, 30-26, earlier this season. But Breidor has improved greatly, however, since his first collegiate bout against Rigolosi. In the 132-pound semi-final bout Saturday sophomore *Bob McMath will meet the winner of the Mike Stevenson (A) Vince Palumbo (M) bout. McMath's appearance in the Easterns will be his third collegiate bout. But the clever lightweight may be a "dark horse" for the Lions. Stokes Meets Nelson Jack Stokes, the third Lion to receive a bye into the semi-finals Saturday afternoon will face Art Nelson, 147-pounder from Syra cuse. Nelson may give the Lions' polished sophomore some trouble. Nelson won his first-round entry last year in the saine tourney, but failed to make the weight in .his - .:ecOnd. bout.
