THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 195? Werner. Picks Orange Top Contender in IC-4A's Head Coach Chick Werner, who admits that the Lions will be a contender, believes the favorite’s role belongs to Syracuse for Mon day’s 45th renewal of the IC-4A cross-country championships over the New York’s Van Cortland Park course. “This is a good Syracuse team,” Werner contended, “which was licked only by Cornell in an up set. In Ray Osterhout,” he added, “the New Yorkers own the stand out favorite in the individual field.” Osterhout, who finished second to Charlie Capozzolli a year ago, owns the year’s best times. Moorhead, a sophomore who never donned spikes until he reached the campus, is the major surprise, It' was largely ■ his un expected showing that ■ enabled the Lion harriers to trip Cornell, Michigan State and Manhattan in dual meets and Navy' and George town in a triangular meeting. Names Pitt Contender Team-wise, Werner thinks Michigan State’s defending cham pions, unbeaten Pitt, Georgetown and perhaps Cornell also will fig ure in the picture. After Oster hout, he likes Jim Byrne, of St. John’s, John Joe Barry, of Vil lanova, Lyle Garbe, .of Michigan State, and his own Bob Hollen among the individuals. He says the race should be fast and spir ited. Ted Garrett, of Baden, and Jim Hamill, of Coatesville, will round out the Penn State fivesome which will bid for the IC-4A title it last won- in 1951.
