No matter what is done to promote it, cross-country seems des
tined to remain in the dim backgtound ,as far as intercollegiate ath
letics •are concerned.
It's a shame that, the sport doesn't receive the recognition and
popularity that it deserves. It may not have the color or action so
prominently displayed in sports
like football, basketball, or base
ball, but here is a sport' that not
only offers a terrific display of
stamina, but requires perfection
in training and strategy for the
winning runners
The sport was originated as a
'conditioning program for track
men, but slowly developed into
a full-fledged intercollegiate sport.
It has become the key-note in
distance running.
It takes strong legs, a stout
chest, and fast thinking to make
a distance runner good. The
five-mile course requires con
stant pradtice and conditioning.
But the secret to success doesn't
lie entirely in physical ability.
A good runner knows his , oppo
nents weak points. Taking ad
vantage of this kind of know
ledge, a runner can strengthen
his chances 100 per cent. '
So this game of grueling, driv
ing, overland racing isn't as sim
ple as it may appear on the sur
face. Like the successful quarter
back, the successful runner must
be thinking all the time.
Under head track coach Chick
Werner, cross-country has been
extremely successful at Penn
State. Werner, one of the most .

are reasons to believe 'that the

Although the game is popular
at the Vale, it still doesn't attract
the spectators it deserves. Of
course, the big reason here lies in
the fact that the fan is unable to
watch the entire race. He can
watch the group start. He .sees
them pass the half-way mark.
And he sees the finish, which is,
of course, the most important part
of the race.
But he misses the over-all
pattern which develops during
the race—when favorites make
their bids for the lead, when
early leaders begin to fade, and
slowly sift back into the pack.
These are the developments '
which make the race what it is.

Cross-country has been called
the "lonely sport," a fitting title
if ever there was a fitting title.
But although it lacks the lustre
'that only a massive, excited
throng of rooters can give it.
cross-country, in our book, still
ranks with the best in intercol
legiate athletics. Hat's off to a
great competitive sport!'
