Lion '9' Wins, 5-4,
Drops Second, 3-0
By DICK McDOWELL
Powerful Keith Vesling won his seventh game of the season yesterday as the Lion
baseball team split a doubleheader with West Virginia at Morgantown: The Lions had to
go twelve innings in the opening contest to get a 5-4 victory but then dropped the seven
frame nightcap, 3-0.
The Nittanies could manage only six safeties in the first game, scoring the winning
j run in the top half of the twelfth
when Hubie Kline lifted a long
fly with the bases loaded.'
Vesling, who now haS a 7-2 rec
ord, allowed ten hits, but was
able to spread them equally. He
got into trouble in the first inn
ing after the Lions had scored
one run in their half on Chuck
Russo's double, a walk, Wild pitch,
and Sil Cerchie's long fly. The
Mountaineers scored twice in
that frame on three hits.
Penn State bounced back in the
second, scoring two more on two
walks, a sacrifice, and two errors.
Then in the fifth West Virginia
knotted the count with one run
on two hits. The Lions scored once
in the seventh and West Virginia
tied it up again in the eighth with
one tally.
Neither team could score
through, the ninth, tenth, or
eleventh frames. Then :n the top
of the twelfth, Russo walked and
Ron Weidenhammer singled him
to third. Tom Werner walked to
load the bases. Sil Cerchie was
out on an infield fly and then
Kline came through - by belting a
long fly to left with Russo scor
ing after the catch.
The second game was a tight
pitcher's battle all the way. Gar
Gingeribh dropped his second
contest of the season as the Lions
could make only three hits.. The
Lion right hander allowed only
four himself but four Lion errors
aided the Mountaineer cause.
West Virginia scored its first
marker in the opening frame on
an error, a stolen base, and short
stop Chuck Stanley's single. The
Mountaineers added their other
two in the sixth on an error, a
fielder's choice, another single by
Stanley, and catcher Jack Wel
lington's long double.
The Lions• finish the season
schedule Saturday when they
meet Temple at Philadelphia.
The split yesterday gives the Nit
tanies 12-4-1 record.

For ,Third.l.straight.
The Lion tennis team made its third consecutive victory a. very,
sweet one yesterday on the College courts as it completely reversed
an early-season humiliation by Bucknell and trounced the visiting
Bisons, 8-1.
It was a well-seasoned Bucknell outfit that got at the un

day things were all even match
wise. The overall seasonal mark
for the Lions now stands at 4-5.
All three Nittany doubles teams
won as did five of the six singles
performers. Only Dick Robinson
in the singles lost—and at that,
the match went three sets
Robinson met his old arch
rival, Bison Paul Remmey, for
the third and last time in inter
collegiate play in the top singles
match of the afternoon. Remmey
won, 6-8, 6-4, 6-0, grabbing the
rubber match of their personal
college duel.
'Otherwise in singles, Lou Lan
don,
Bruz Ray, Bill Ziegler, Cap
tain Bill Forrey, and Dick Gross
all posted easy two-set - wins. Lan
don beat Al Holton, 6-1, 6-4, to
avenge an early defeat.
Ray and Ziegler won their
.1 :itches in fine style. Ray defeated
..,iegler's old opponent Joe Battin,
6-0, 6-4, while Ziegler dumped
Ray's old opponent, Spencer Len
hardt, 6-3, 6-4.
Captain Forrey took 26 minutes
