PAGE TWO Samson Takes 191-Pound Title (Continued from page one) couldn't keep his Oklahoma.foe flush with the mat. He did, however, earn a near fall. In the second period Maurey had the disadvantage, wrestling from the referee's position. Nevertheless, Scott was easily reversed Scott tallied on two escapes—one for free. To insure himself of the victory, Maurey took Scott down before the end of the final period. Don Frey also followed with a third place position as he won a referee's decision fr o m Chuck Uram of Pitt. Frey hit the scoring column first with an escape and Maintained his lead until the next period when Uram escaped. Frey's aggressiveness, however, was tell ing in the decision. " Lemyre Scores Reverse • Although Joe Lemyre was one of the two defending champions who were dethroned, he did show that he should not be underrated. The 167-pound Nittany Lion deci sioned Dana. Eastham of Brown, 6-2, to grab third place in that weight class. Eastham pinned two of his three men in less than three hours to win a position in the con solation bouts Lemyre caught Eastham in his own trap by scoring a reverse and near fall while Eastham had a figure four hold around Lemyre's body. Eastham had received two points earlier on a reverse. Spei del's barrel-chested standout add ed to his 4-2 lead with a reverse. This gave Penn State a ten-to seven lead over the Sooners. Big Seven Champ Loses Hugh Peery, Pitt's Olympian, defended his NCAA honors, with an impressive, 5-1, decision over Bob Christensen of Northwestern. The dancing Northwesterner found himself two points behind when the Pitt 115-pounder took him down. Christensen rode Peery with a figure four hold ink the second period but Peery escaped in the final seconds. After that ii; was all Peery. Oklahoma's bid for its first 1953 NCAA champion was blackened when Dick Mueller, Minnesota, pinned Hal Reece, with a body press. Mueller gave, the Sooners something to - think about as he took Reece down nicely. After the Minnesota matman moved too far in front of Big Seven 123-pound champ, Reece was able to get loose for an escape. In the second period Reece received two points for an illegal body slam. Wrestling from the referee's position, Reece escaped. Bettucci Champ Aside from - Frank Bettucci of Cornell who received the out standing wrestler award, Olym pian Len DeAugustino of Lock Haven - was certainly the most im pressive matman in the tourna ment. He handled the talented field of 137-pounders well and had little trouble in defeating Norton Compton of Illinois, 3-1, to win the championship. Compton's point was an escape while DeAugustino 'scored a take down and an es cape. The latter point was made on a one minute possum play and then a quick turn. Bettucci, one of Cornelrs two champions, took the 157-pound title 1)37 decisioning /Bob Hoke, Michigan State, 6-3. Bettucci ac tually won when he took the Spartan grappler down at the buzzer. Army's Al Paulekas whose at tempt to give the East a dominat ing field of, champions was halted when Ned Blass, Oklahoma A&M, decisioned the Cadet matman, 3-4. ' The 5000 fans who' witnessed the semi-finals yesterday after noon observed what was certain ly the match of the tournament— Dick Lemyre, Penn State's EIWA champ, won a referee's decision from Oklahonia's fine 130-pound er, Hal Reece. It was the first time that the Lions had the opportun ity to eliminate an Oklahoma matman. • When Reece took down State's "Dandy Dick," midway in th e initial period, it • appeared that one more Penn State matman was on his way out of the finals. Le myre, however, came to life dur ing the second period when he, re versed Reece who only a few sec onds earlier had gained a reversal himself. With the tension increasing on each move, Reece once again re versed Lemyre, but not for long as State's slippery and agile 130- pounder reversed Reece. Then Le myre capably rode the Sooners' Big Seven champion , for two min -Ites time advantage.
