Arnelle Named
On W. Virginia
2d 'All' Team
Jesse Arnelle, Penn State's 6-5
sophomore athlete, was honored
by two basketball teams this week
when he was named to West Vir
ginia. University's second all
opponent team and was given
honorable mention on the Pitts
burgh Post-Gazette's Tri-State
Big Ten squad.
Arnelle, who doubles as a foot
ball star and is now trying his
hand as a pitcher for Joe Be
denk's Nittany baseball tea m,
joined Dick Wilkinson (Virginia);
Warren Mills (Richmond), Bill
Chambers (William & Mary), and
Joe Holup (George Washington)
on the Mountaineers' second all
opponent team.
The Post-Gazette's Big Ten team
selected by a poll of the Big Ten
coaches found Jesse winding up
with three votes. Last, year, Ar
nelle was named to the first five,
but he was one of four on that
squad who failed to repeat this
season.
Duquesne's Dick Ricketts led
the voting with eight while St.
Francis' sensational Maur ic e
Stokes garnered seven. Pete Kin
kead, of Geneva, and Jim Sottile,
of West Virginia, each had six
votes while John Mojzer, of Wash
ington and Jefferson College,
rounded out the first team with
five votes.
Besides Arnelle, Tom Craig
(Carnegie Tech), Jim Tucker, Du
quesne), and Mickey Zernich
(Pitt) failed to repeat their 1952
choices on the first five. Mark
Workman, the other player on
that team, graduated.
Mitchell's Hit Decides
TUCSON, Ariz., March 27.(W)

the bases loaded, quickly followed
by Jim Lemon's three-run homer,
totaled five s runs for the Cleveland
Indians in the eighth inning today

Jan Cronstedt, the amazing
Finn, captured the all-around ti
tle with 1275 points. He was fol
lowed by Carl Rintz of Michigan
State (1258); Frank Bare, Illinois
(1210); Bartlett, Minnesota (1202);
State's Karl Schwenzfeier (1198),
with Tohy Procopio of the Lions
finishing sixth.
The new all-around champ qual
ified for three of tomorrow's
events: calisthenics, horizontal
bar and parallel bars. Schwenz
feier will be in three events, also;
calisthenics, 'parallel bars and
rings, while Procopio will per
form in the calisthenics. The
finals begin at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.
Nine of the 10 Lion gymnasts
performed well enough to qualify
for the finals. The only one who
was unable to get a pasing grade
was Frank Wick.
Florida State in Running
The famed "Wedge," Jim Hazen„
came through on the flying rings.
Al Wick qualified on the parallel
bars. Dependable Bobby Lawrence
came through on the sidehorse,
while teammates Dave Shultz and
Bob Boudreau passed on the rope
climb. Team Captain Bob Ken
yon qualified in the trampoline
event, but at the latest report
the tumbling, which is his spe
cialty, was not over.
Florida State. champs for the
past two seasons, pressed the
Lions as it qualified men in 14
events, the same number the Blue
and White advanced. Other teams
still very much in the race are
Illinois (Western Conference
champ) with 13; Syracuse, 12;
and UCLA with 9 men moving up.
Perry Sets Rope Mark
Southern Cal, which finished
second last year, and Minnesota,
which came in second in the West
ern Conference, were not among
the first five.
The fans in Syracuse's Arch
bold Gymnasium saw a new
ropeclimbing record set as Don
Perry of UCLA shaved one-tenth
of a second off his own world
mark and four-tenths of a second
off the NCAA record as he zoomed
up the 20-foot distance in three
seconds.
Teammate, Bob Hammond, also
cracked the NCAA mark when
he was clocked at 3.3.
