Runners Lose to Army;
Grier Sets Shot Mark
Two Penn State indoor track records were shattered at West Point Saturday while
the Nittany Lion trackmen were bowing to the Army Cadets, 63 2/3 to 45 V 3, in the Lions’
lone dual meet of the current season. -
Rosey Grier, 230 pound Lion gridder, put the shot 51-%
yich’s record of 51-0 set in 1950.
The second record-breaking
event came as the Lions’ one-mile
relay t e am . improving steadily
with each meet, turned in a 3:21.5
time to top the old record of
3:22.2. With the Lions trailing in
the final lap of that event, anchor:-'
man Ollie Sax took the baton; and
ran a sizzling 48.6 lap to clinch the
win and.-the record time.
Running with Sax on: the rec-’
ord-setting squad were .-Bill Kil r :
mer, who turned in a 51.7 lap;
Dave Leathern, 50.5; and Skip
50.7. • "■
The Lions managed to capture
the 600-yard run, high jump, two
mile relay,-and, first'place tie in
the pole vault ." ■ *
Sax turned in a 1:13.5 in the
600-yard run, to capture that
event, while the two-mile relay
squad spun out ah 8:07 win, Run
ning in that event were Bob Geh
man, Dick Austin; Bob Roessler,
and Roy Brunjes. !
Jim Herb was first in the high
jump, topping the bar at ,6-3.
Boyd and Judd of Army finished
second, registering 6-1 leaps.
Dan Lorch tied Army’s Perlow
for the pole vault honors; Both
reached 13 feet before being elim
inated.
State contestants also'competed
in the one and two-mile run, 60-
yard high hurdles,. 35-pouhd
weight, running broad jump, and
1000-yard run, but could not gain
any first place there.
The meet was the fourth of the
indoor season for the Lions, three
of which were invitationals. The
thinclads competed in the Wash
ington Star Meet, Philadelphia
Inquirer Games and the Milrose
Games in New York. The last

■ In the Inquirer-Meet, Sax fin
ished second in the 600-yard run
behind the incomparable Mai
Whitfield. Whitfield won the 800-
meter run in the 1948, and 1952
Olympics. In the Milrose games
last week, it-was the same story.
Sax again finished second to
Whitfield.
- The Lion one-mile relay team
also got a taste of victory in the
Milrose classic, edging- Syracuse
at the tape. In this race, Sax again
ran a fast anchor leg (48-7) to
break the tape for the win. The
team time was 3:22.7.
■ Saturday the Lions will travel
to New York again to compete in
the - New York Athletic. Club

Enters Basketball Finals
Thompson-McMaster, winner of League I in women’s intramural
basketball, beat Gamma Phi Beta, League II thampions, 46-21 last
night to become winners of the semi-finals. ,
In a fast-moving game Thompson-McMaster scored 16 points
in the second quarter to pull the score up from 10-10 to 26-12 over
Gamma Phi Beta. In the.third quarter Barbara Lewis, high scorer
of the game with 26 points, upped'
the score to 39-13. Gamma Phi
retaliated in the fourth quarter
scoring eight points to Thomp
son’s seven, with Marty Rojahn
leading the team.

In the ping-pong semi-finals,
Atherton East, winners of League

cy Mayhew and Barbara Charles
of Alpha' Xi Delta, League II
champions, won over Lenore Babi
one and Ruth Myers of Little
Lions, winner of League I, to take
the semi-finals. In singles, Pa
tricia Lively, Alpha Xi. won over
Stephanie Halaiko, Little Lions,
and Barbara Rice, Little Lions,
was beaten by Patricia Farrell,
Alpha, Xi Delta. Ping-pong finals
will be played tonight.
