Early Arabic
On Exhibit
Pieces of Bth-century , inscribed Arabic glass weights—similar
in composition to the kind used today in bottles,, window panes, and
plate glass—are on display in the Mineral Industries Building until
Christmas.
The display is the work of Dr. Frederick R. Matson,. professor
of ceramics. He determined the
composition of the ancient glass by
chemical analysis.
The glass weights were the an
swer of the Moslem governors in
Cairo to local chiselers, according
to Dr. Matson. The chiselers liked
to clip small pieces from the gold
and silver coin_ s that served , as
their currency. Then they would
pass the clipped coins along at
face value and also sell the clip
pings, or items made from the
chips of metal, for a profit.
To counteract this fraudulent
practice, Dr. Matson said, the gov
ernors had glass disks made ex
actly •the same weight and ap
proximate . shape as . the metal
coins. A merchant could then
weigh a metal coin against its
glass duplicate on' a balance scale;
if the metal coin weighed less, he
knew it had been clipped. Any
attempt to meddle with the mas
ter weight would result in shat
tered glass, or an . obviously chip
ped glass weight.
In line with his work, Dr. Mat
son became interested in making
a chemical and microscopic an
alysis of -these glass weights. He
was hampered , by the fact that
they are rare, and can seldom be
spared for research that would be
destructive.
Finally, one glass weight turned
up with its inscription ,so blurred
that it was of little intrinsic worth.
And just recently Dr. Matson was
fortunate enough to get several
others from Dr. George C. Miles,
of the American Numismatic So-;
ciety of New York.
Thus, Dr. Matson was able to
chemically analyze the ancient
glass, and discover the similarity
of composition. • between it and
present-day glass in bottles, win
doW panes, and plate glass.
Dr. Matson believes his .work
will supplement - that of arche
ologists like Dr. Miles, who recon
structed part of the preceding
history concerning these weightsd
