Gross' Top Six Cage Specialists
THE TOP SIX basketball Lions, (I. to r.), Joe
Piorkowski, Jack Sherry. Ned Haag, Captain
Herm Sledzik, Jesse Arnelle, and l'ion Weiden
hammer, are poised and set for tonight's curtain
Courtmen O • . en--
Both teams are directed by former players of ex-Lion mentor, John Lawther.
Starting his fourth year at Penn State will be Elmer Gross who played under Lawther
from 39-41, while the Saxons have as their coach Jay McWilliams, who played for the
Lions in 1936-38. So McWilliams is well versed in the sliding zone defense that Mr. Lawther
taught and which is now being
used by the Lions.
The Saxons will enter the game
with a slight advantage in the
experience department. They al
ready have three games under the
hoop, losing one and winning the
other two.
Alfred Lost Once
They swamped a future Lion
opponent, Ithaca, by some 20
points and took a Brockport con
test by 11 tallies. This was the
first time they were able to beat
this team in three years.
Their only loss was at the hands
of Cornell University. Incidental
ly, Ithaca lost by only five points
to St. Bonaventure last week. The
Bonnies, an annual powerhouse
in basketball, entered the NIT
tourney last year and defeated
Duquesne in consolation play.
Successful Exhibition
In their two winning contests,
the Saxons used an all-court press
with a dribble weaving offense,
but it is doubtful if they'll use
the same type of offense tonight
since it isn't very effective against
the zone.
The Lions have just completed
a very successful six game ex
hibition program, winning five
while dropping one. They defeat
ed Lock Haven State Teachers
twice, Juniata Colleg twice, and
last Saturday avenged an earlier
setback by knocking off powerful
St. Francis and Maurice Stokes
College. Score was 69-63 with
Stokes getting 30 points.
Most of the Lion starters are in
good condition with the except-

brash Meet JV's
In Ca • e_Preliminary
Coach John Egli's freshman basketball team will be put to its
first test tonight—probably the toughest the yearlings will face all
season—when it meets the junior varsity squad at Rec Hall. The
.iminary to the varsity tilt
.with
contest , will be played as a pre
Alfred University. Game time is
6 p.m.
The frosh will be opening a
comparatively short eight game
schedule, all home games, and
will meet the JV's again tomor
row night prior to the State:
Washington and Jefferson game.
Leading the untried frosh will
be sharpshooting Hall Brown of
York. The 5-10 guard climaxed
his last two years in high school
with All-State honors before en
tering the college ranks, He's a
speedy play-maker who can hit
from anywhere on the floor, and
he should give the frosh a big
boost.
Brennan, Marisa Forwards .
The big man on Egli's squad is
Ed Hauck, a 6-6 center. Hauck
Is a good man on the backboards
and a fine shot from inside. Two
more tall men, Jim Dowrick, 6-5,
and John Hamilton, 6-4, will prob
ably see plenty of action in the
pivot spot and under the boards.
Both are good rebound men and
possess fine pivot shots.
Jim Brennan, 6-3, and Rudy
Marisa, 6-2, two aggressive for
wards, will play a lot of ball at
position. Brennan is - a driving
type ball player and a very ef
fective passer.
Art Martynuska and Hugo
Mori have been very impressive
at the guard position, Martynus
ka, 6-1, is an excellent ball hand
ler and passer. Mori, standing at
5-9, is the small man on the squad.

Earl Fields and Ed Rudler
round out Egli's first ten men.
Both are forwards, standing 6-0,
and will probably see a lot of ac•
tion, Rudler is a set shot artist,
and Fields is a play-making fast
break man.
Egli has indicated that he will
use two platoons for the first two
quarters of the game. He will
have Mori and Rudler at the guard
slots on one team, Hamilton at
center, and Marisa and FieMk at
the forwards. ,
Martynuska and Brown will
handle the - guard duties on the
second squad, with Hauck at the
pivot slot, and Brennan and Dow
rick at the forwards.
No definite lineup has been in
dicated for th e Junior Varsity
squad. The team is composed of
varsity reserves.
