For Important
Temple Game
Penn State's soccer team, gluttonous with goals and with
a successful two-win road jaunt under its belt, is now firing
its boilers for Saturday's crucial match with Temple.
Lion booter Coach Bill Jeffrey was obviously jubilant
over the 7-0, 4-1 victories the Nittany soccermen registered.
the past weekend against North
Carolina and Duke.
"We played a very fine team
in Duke, who had many clever,
fighting ball players that wanted
to play the game and not try to
win by using rough tactics," Jef
frey said. "The game was close
all the way, and despite the rain
which made playing conditions
bad, it was one of the better
games we've had this season."
Pinezich Nears Record
Jeffrey was high in his praise
for ace Lion point-getter jack
Pinezich, - who came through in
the clutch brilliantly, scoring sev
en goals for the two road games.
The Lion soccer mentor also gave
flashy Nittany wingman Bill Nor
elk credit for his :beautiful past-
ing, which set up many of Pine
zich's tallies.
Pinezich, with his fabulous
scoring achievements of ]ate, is
nearing Penn State's seasonal
scoring record of 21 goals, set by
Bill McEwan in 1935 for seven
games. McEwan was All-Ameri
can three years.
Pinezich has an excellent chance
to tie or break NlcEwan's 17-year
standard with two games 'remain
ing on the Nittany soccer slate.
The Brooklyn sophomore at pres
ent has 19 goals for seven games,
an average of 2.7 pointers per'con
test.
Jeffrey said that while the Blue
Devil eleven gave the Nittanies a
Harriers to Defend IC4A Crown
Instead of one, there will be
three and possibly five cross-coun
try squads anxious to relieve Penn
State of its IC4A crown in the
44th running of the intercollegiate
five-mile race at Van Cortland
Park, New York City, Monday.
Winners of the team trophy the
past two seasons, Coach Chick
Werner's distance forces will have
Syracuse. Michigan State, Army,
and probably St. John's and Vil
lanova to contend with when the
starting gun is fired.
Penn State and Michigan State
have both won top IC honors six
times. Only Cornell, with nine
team titles, has won more.
Smith Fourth
The Big - Red haven't won since
1921, and don't expect to be
among the top finishers this year.
The Spartans and the Lions have
held the upper hand the past 30
Years.
In 1951 Lamont Smith led the
Lion harriers to a hard-earned
67-68 upset victory over Army.
The Black Knights' Dick Shea
churned out a record-breaking
24:55.1 to cop individual laurels.
Smith, t hen a frosh, placed
fourth in 25;42. Habitual team
pace-setter Bill. Ashenfelter could
do no better than sixth place.
Other Nittany placers were Red
Hollen, 15th; Jack Horner, 20th;
and Doug Foster, 22nd. Ash and

fact, the Nittany defense bot
tled up the Tarheel offense so
completely that the Corn Pone
Eaters couldn't record a shot until
the final quarter when a North
Carolina boot, which was intend
ed to be a pass, was listed offi
cially as a shot. Otherwise, the
Nittany defense would have been
able to reach a zenith of not hav
ing allowed a shot for a game.
For their seven goals in the
Tarheel clash, the Jeffreymen un
loaded a total' of 54 shots, high
mark for the Lion kickers this
season. A tough Blue Devil de
fense limited them to only 21 at
tempts in Monday's tilt, while the
Lion defense allowed but eight
cracks at the net.
Jeffrey was well-pleased with
the achievements ,of the defense,
which . may yet see goalie Red
Harris guarding the Lion net in
a rocking chair. In particular, dur
ing the southern swing, Paul
Dierks displayed exceptional de
fensive ability from his right full
back post. Dierks was a bulwark
on defense in the Duke engage
ment and a big reason why the
Devils could manage only eight
shots.
Foster have graduated, but Smith,
Hollen, and Horner are back for
another crack at the IC title.
Monday's race looms as a four
way battle among State, Syracuse,
Michigan State, and Army, with
Villanova and St. John's rated an
outside chance to break into the
group.
Syracuse Unbeaten
From the standpoint of seasonal
records, Syracuse is the only
