Support NEW YORK, Sept.' 15 (IP)- AFL leaders keynoted their 8,000,000 members today toward all-out political support of the Democratic party.—and the first presidential endorsement in their history. Their goal, outlined to the 71st AFL Convention, is repeal of the Taft-Hartley law. AFL President William Green bitterly labeled it that “obnoxious, dirty Taft-Hart ley law.” Green foresaw labor as “a very deciding factor” in the November elections. And the approximately 800 convention delegates were told they would be “strike breaking at the ballot box” if they backed supporters of Taft-Hartley—who are chiefly Republicans. Never before has the AFL Con vention given all-out endorsement to a presidential candidate. But the temper today was such that Gov. Thomas E. Dewey—a Repub lican —wcindered in a welcoming speech it this convention wasn’t just “a Democratic clambake.” An endorsement of Gov. Adlai W. Stevenson for President is ex pected next week, after he and his Republican rival, Dwight D. Eisenhower, have . addressed the convention. THE DAILY COLLEGIAN. STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA and he switched to an auto mobile for a four county Illinois tour before reboarding it. The GOP presidential nominee arrived in Illinois after seven “whistle stops” in Indiana—high lighted by a turnout of scores of thousands' in South Bend. Obviously referring to quips by Democratic presidential nominee Gov. Adlai E. Stevenson of Illin ois, Eisenhower said the times' and the issues were too serious for amusing treatment. The usually jovial general was unsmiling as he declared Korea, corruption, and communism were “not funny.” , In attacking communism, inside and outside United States borders, Eisenhower referred to an expres sion once used by President Tru man. He told an audience against a backdrop of steel furnaces at Gary: • “When we find that there have been Communists in government, and we get the answer ‘red her ring,’ ladies and gentlemen, it is time to clean the.m out —not only the Communists . . . but . . . the people that put them there.” Police estimated 40,000 heard Eisenhower speak from the St. Joseph County Courthouse steps in South Bend and that 60,000 saw him tour the city. Combined estimates for all the Eisenhower stops in Indiana put the total crowds at about 150,000. He told the South Bend crowd he had heard that citizens them selves were to blame for corrup tion in government because gov ernment corruption reflected pri vate corruption—a point made by Stevenson.
