Those New Clothes?
—• Sure, frosh, we did it too. Pored through Mademoiselle and
other authorities on what will be seen on well-dressed campuses
this year . . . took the words of friends from Vassar, Bryn Mawr
and Penn to heart. . . and arrived at the College practically snowed
Under by suitcases, trunks, and hatbox.es, not to mention ice skates,
tennis rackets and a stuffed baby
panda.
. Needless to say. about one-half
of our wardrobe was wearable?.
The Bermuda shorts, worn for
bicycling, classes and informal
dates at women’s colleges, were
skeletons in our closet . . . the
caps and berets that looked so
fetching in the ads were simply
dustcatchers . . . and so it went.
Although cotton dresses should
be most comfortable for the next
few weeks, one morning you’ll
wake up and find. that it’s cold
outside. Time for a blouse or
sweater and skirt. Not long shorts
' or dungarees for class, please, but
a skirt. Of course, there are ex
ceptions to every rule. There’s
nonsense ruining good clothes in
a chem lab, and jeans are a life
-saver there.
Slacks Go to Class
You’ll find they’re comfortable
for Saturday morning excursions
downtown, and what you wear in
the dorm is your own business.
Penn State’s infamous weather
is another excuse for dressing as
you please. Come the first snow,
high winds and falling tempera
tures, wool slacks and ski pants
get the nod as the most comfor
table way to go to class.
For week-night dates—basket
ball. movies, or coffee and talk
casual separates are the most
suitable. They’re also right for
football games . . . wear furs and
heels and you’ll be mistaken for
an import.
This casual air is even carried
over to the weekends, for ultra
sophistication seems a little out
erf place at movies, sports events,
informal fraternity parties and
independent dances, which all
make up the general round of
activity. You’ll probably find you
often wear suits and knit and
woolen dresses (Hi Friday nights
dressier outfits for Saturday
dates, but it depends on what
you’re going to do. If you’re un
certain it’s always better to be
underdressed.
Short Formals Popular
And don’t set your Heart on
making a sensation Big Weekend
with a Dior creation. Chances are
Saturday night will he a costume
party, and your creation will be
a home made Arabian, French
Apache or cowgirl job. But the
Friday night semi-formal is a dif
ferent story, and then you can
go overboard with glamour.
To go back to the weather,
which is always a consideration,
short formals are popular because
there’s less chance of their being
ruined. It’s a long walk to Bee
Hall, and you can’t always count
on a ride.
-A simple dress or suit and a hat
are right for Chapel or church
—an especially pretty one, if
you’re going to “the house” for
dinner afterward. Church is the

goes bareheaded, even to such
functions as teas.
Rain Clothes Necessary
Just a few predictions:
If you’re not already equipped
with raincoat, umbrella and boots
that’s the first thing you’ll find
you need, probably before this
week is out. When it rains at
Penn State, it rains.
When you roll out of bed for
an eight o’clock you wijl be too
groggy to know what you’re drag
ging out of the closet and putting
on. Happily, the class will be too
groggy to notice the pink sweater
red skirt combination.
Next year you will vow that
you have learned, you will never
again bring all the paraphernalia.
But you will. We did.
Vogue Contest
Deadline Set
Oct. 1 is the deadline for appli
cations to Vogue magazine’s Prix
de Paris contest, offering as first
prize one year as a Vogue staff
member, with six months in Paris
and six in New York.
Enrollment blanks for the con
test, open only to college seniors,
may be obtained from Vogue’s
Prix de Paris director at 420 Lex
ington avenue, New York 17.
Second prize is a six month’s
job with Vogue in the New York
office. Ten winners of honorable
mention will receive $25 cash
prizes and consideration for jobs
on other Conde Nast publications.
All winners will be introduced
to executives at leading stores and
advertising agencies, according to
an announcement of the magazine.
Entrants are required to pass
two quizzes based on fashion fea
tures and such topics as music,
art, literature, and the theater.
Final Prix de Paris judging will
be based on a 1500 word thesis.
Leetch to Participate
in 'Recruit' Workshop
George N. P. Leetch, director
of the College Placement Service,
will participate in a workshop on
“Recruitment of College Gradu
ates” in Pittsburgh on September
17. The session will be sponsored
by the Society for the Advance
ment of Management and will
be held at the University Club.

Panhellenic
Regulates
19 Sororities
Panhellenic Council is an organ
ization established to promote bet
ter relationships among the 19 na
tional sororities on campus. Two
representatives from each sorority
serve on the council, which is af
filiated with the National Pan
hellenic Conference.
Panhel sets up the rushing code
for sororities and its judicial com
mittee prescribes penalties for vio
lations.
Marlene Heyman, Phi Sigma
Sigma, is president of the council.
Ellen Wandel, Beta Sigma Omi
cron, is vice president. These po
sitions are rotated among the so
rorities according to the order’ the
gromps joined Panhel. Other Pan
hel officers are Patricia Wertz,
Delta Gamma, recording secre
tary; Sally Diehl, Zeta Tau Alpha,
corresponding secretary; Mary
Martin, Gamma Phi Beta, treas
urer; and Janet Herd, Kappa Al
pha Theta, rush chairman.
Panhellenic Council and Inter
fraternity Council collaborate in
sponsoring the annual IFC-Panhel
Ball at Recreation Hall in the
spring. The two organizations also
jointly sponsor the IFC-Panhel
Sing.
The council awards three $5O
scholarships to deserving women
on campus. It also presents a
scholarship cup at the end of each
semester to the sorority having
the highest scholastic average.
The president of Panhel serves
on All-College Cabinet.
Panhel publishes a booklet each
year for new women students on
campus.

What to Wear
College
Fashion
College men in England and on the continent have always been
more fashion conscious than American men, according to stylists in
our century. But now, so say American magazines, the U. S. college
man is starting to catch up to the “old country.”
Maybe it had something to do with President Truman’s “Oh, so
bright and loud” sport shirts, or perhaps it’s a conspiracy of Ameri
can women—anyway, the men are
beginning to see the fashion light.
And sometimes steal the lime
light
Penn State men have not al
ways been too concerned about
fashion, but in the last few years
the influence of Esquire and
other magazines and newspapers
has begun to show in the Nittany
Valley. Of course there’s no re
turn to the beaver jacket of the
twenties or to the “I say, old boy”
styles of Oxford, but a change can
be seen.
Sturdy . Cloth Preferred
For example, the tone or bright
ness of men’s clothing has calmed
down. The gentleman now wears
light and dark grays, tans, and
even black more than ever. The
outstanding example of this trend
is the almost too popular gray
flannels.
This fall the gray and brown
shade suits and odd coats are
among the top favorites. And in
material the trend is toward the
rougher, more sturdy cloths —
tweeds, flannels, and salt and
pepper shaded material.
Bright Accessories Prevail
Shirts, too, for the dressed-up
man have toned down in color.
The past favorite white shirt is
now being' pushed from the pic
ture by light l shades of blue, tan,
green, and even faded yellow.
The button-down collar has even
penetrated the Nittany land here
and there.
But, of course, the toning down
of suits and slacks has brought a
rise in the brightness of accessor
ies, Striking plaids, checks, and
stripes in such articles as vests'
(the tattersal is well-liked), hand
kerchiefs, ties, socks, belts, and
even cuff links and tie clips are
very popular. And they put color
into the less prominent colors of
the basic clothes.
Sports clothes, what everyone
wears to classes, are also less
violent in color and clash. Check
ed jackets, dark-colored shirts,
gray, black or brown slacks are
most popular. For some reason,
though, blue and white remains a
favorite in these parts..

latest trend in tuxedos is the ad
dition of more colorful accessories.
Both maroon and blue pocket
handkerchiefs and simulated car
nations have' become more popu
lar, in addition to the plaid tartan
trim and sash.' The tux itself is
frequently a shawl collar type.
And now, for a rundown of
what to wear, and where to wear
it around State College.
For classrooms sports clothes
axe the favorite—dark or medium
dark pants with plain white or
light color shirts. Sweaters are
preferably solid colors or two
tone; designed sweaters are los
ing popularity. Shoes are loafers
—black, brown • or white, oxford,
and the inevitable white bucks,
usiially dirty. Socks are dark
colors and argyles.
At the football game brighter
colors are called for, but wear
that Penn State jacket if you have
one. And dress warmly— don’t
forget a sweater or heavy socks.
It gets mighty cool up at Beaver
Field when you’re' sitting there a
couple of hours. If you’re bringing
a date, wear a tie. Even if it’s with
a sports jacket, it looks a lot bet
ter.
For that movie or mid-week
date, wear a sports coat, dark
slacks or flannels, tie, and not
too-loud. socks. But remember,
women still, prefer a man in a
suit to the sport coat-slacks cbm
bination.
House weekend dates definitely
call for a suit, no sports coat. If
it’s formal get a tux, and don’t
forget a corsage for her.
And 1 a few last' tips. Regardless
of the attempts of industry and
advertising, the college man at
Penn State still doesn’t wear a hat
unless it’s raining or such. Speak
ing of rain, it comes heavy up
here—stock up on a good rain
coat and hat, check your car for
leaks, and get an umbrella—she
may forget to bring one.
Remember, it’s no crime to be
well dressed, and it is expected of
the college man.
