WSGA Makes, Enforces
Regulations for Women
Rules and regulations' for women students at the College are
formulated and enforced by the Women's Student Goi , ernment As
sociation.
WSGA, formed in 1915, was reorganized in 1916 and is
posed of a Senate and a House of Representatives.
- The basic governing body is the living unit, which is made
a section of each of the women's
dormitories. Hostesses are in
'charge of each of these units, and
act as advisers at regular house
meetings.
Each unit elects three officers—
a president, vice president, and
secretary-treasurer.
Apply for Positions
The highest governing group of
WSGA is the Senate. It is .com
posed of four officers, seven sen
ators, and representatives of Le
onides, Panhellenic Council, and
the Women's Recreation Associa
tion.
Nominees for offices are select
ed from the names of women who
apply at the Dean of Women's
office. 'A nominating committee
determines eligible candidates,
who are judged'on scholarship, ex
tra-curricular activities, and lead
ership. Applicants may not have
a major judicial record. All wom
en are eligible to vote in primary
and final elections.
The president of WSGA, Joan
Hutchon, calls and presides over
all meetings of the association and
Senate and can take any matter
before the Senate or the House of
Representatives. She is an ex offi
cio member of all WSGA commit
tees and is the WSGA representa
tive on All-College Cabinet.
Handles Finances
The vice president, B ar b ar a
Werts, presides over the House of
Representatives and takes the
place of the president in her ab-7
senee. Yvonne Carter, secretary,
posts notices of meetings, takes
minutes, and handles correspond
ence.
The treasurer, Maud Strawn,
handles the finances of the organ
ization.- Senior senator Carolyn
McElroy is chairman of the coed
coordinating committee. Marian
Ungar and Nancy White are the
two junior senators. Sylvia Grube
is sophomore senator and town
senator is - Barbara Denniston.
Other members. of the Senate
are Hilda Hogeland, who repre
sents Leonides, Ellen Wand e 1,
Panhellenic CCouncil, and Bar
bara- Wallace, WRA.
Senate meetings are held at
6:30 Wednesday in the WSGA
room in White Hall, and are open
to. all women students.

The House of Representatives,
rnade•up of the presidents of' each
of the housing units, discusses
questions brought up at unit
house meetings, and makes rec
ommendations which are carried
back to the unit meetings.
Town women elect a senator
and a member of the House of
Representatives. A special study
room in Woman's Building is pro
vided for town women. -
Freshman council acts as co
ordinator between freshman wom
en and the WSGA senate. It is
composed of the president, vice
president, and secretary treasurer
of the freshman living units and
one town freshman, with the two
freshman senators acting as ex
officio members. The council dis
cusses freshman problems and, if
necessary, refers them to the Sen
ate.
WSGA activities include plan
ning the annual May Day celebra
tion on Mother's Day weekend,
organizing housing units, filing
activities cards in the Dean of
Women's office, aiding , with the
freshman Orientation Week pro
gram, selecting big-little sisters,
and sponsoring clothing and
Christmas drives, educational lec
tures, an informal dance, and the
junior-senior faculty reception.
Student Handbook
Is 'Frosh Bible'
To serve as a guide to incom
ing freshmen, the Student Hand
book, better known as the
"freshman bible," is published
once each year - and distributed
in the - fall to the newcomers.
The handbook includes infor
mation about the College, reli
gious organizations, student gov
ernment organizations, activities,
athletict, freshman, customs and
regulations, and student employ
ment, arid a listing of the school's
songs and cheers.
This year's handbook editor
was John Hoerr. Frank Kelly was
business manager.
A call for candidates for the
staff of next year's handbook will
be issued early in the spring sem
ester.

Freshman Vivian Drayer's pro
fessors needn't be surprised if she
brings an apple to class to start
her college career off right.
For Vivian has reigned this
past year as Pennsylvania':: Ap
ple Pan Dowdy Queen. Since her
crowning last October she has
been demonstrating her favorite
recipe for apple pan dowdy on
radio and television programs, at
the state farm show, and before
marketing and civic affairs
groups.
As the result of her promotion
work for the Pennsylvania Horti
culture Society, friends of Penn
sylvania. agriculture through the
Pennsylvania Chain Store Coun
cil have arranged a four-year
scholarship •for Vivian.
She'll have ample opportunity
to demonstrate her talents at the
College, too. 'Vivian's taking
home economics.

an open house at 6:45 p.m. Friday
in White Hall.
Representatives of Leonides
and Panhellenic Council will meet
with new women students at 6:45
p.m. Thursday to explain the roles
of these groups on campus. Pan
hel is the governing body for the
19 campus sororities and Leoni
des is the association for inde
pendent women.
An "all-fun night," to be held
at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Recrea
tion Hall, will complete the week's
activities.
