• - .1 • •-•+y In T (^I 7 TTI RA Encourages IM, Club Programs The Women's Recreation Association was organized to provide a constructive athletic program for women students at the College and to promote friendly competition among them. White Hall, the women's physical education building, is the center -for WRA activ ties. The WRA office, 103 White Hall, is open for interested students to acquaint themselves with the athletic program offered by the organization. In order to provide a variety of activities, WRA has set up a program divided into four cate gories. The club activities pro gram offers opportunities for in struction and participation in var ied forms of recreation. The intra mural program includes organized tournaments for individual and team sports. The projects program emphasiied philanthropic activi ties and the individual participa tion program promotes volun tary participation in informal ac tivity. Modern Dance Concert Clubs in badminton, bowling, bridge, fencing, modern dance, officiating, out in g, rifle, and swimming are included in the - club activities program. Member ship is open to all women students at no cost. The clubs are directed by the club activities boar d, which is made up of the club activities chairman and the presi dents of the individual clubs. The modern dance club presents a concert as part of the annual observance of Mother's Day, and the swimming club holds an aqua : cade in the spring. The WRA cabin in the Tussey Mountain range, five miles from campus, is used for bicycle trips, - wiener roasts, hikes, and over night cabin parties. Any group of women students may have par- ties at the cabin by making res- ervations in the WRA office. No - charge is made for the cabin's use by undergraduate women stu - dents. The cabin is fully equipped for cooking and sleeping. Two Trophies Given The intramural program in cludes tournaments in basketball, bowling, badminton, softball, ta ble tennis, swimming, and volley ball. Groups representing classes, sororities, independent women's groups, and dormitory living units participate in the intramural pro gram. WRA awards an intramural cup to the group which wins the larg est number of games in team com petition and a participation cup to the group which has the larg est percentage of its members participating for the greatest number of hours. Two teams made up of the best players in each sport are selected by a committee made up of the faculty adviser, the intra mural chairman, and the class managers. Individual champions are de termined in the all-College single elimination tournaments. All un dergraduate women students are eligible to participate in these events. As part of its project program, WRA undertakes the adoption of a foreign foster child. A Christmas party is given for rural school children; a semi-formal all-Col lege dance, called the Sweetheart Dance, is held annually near Val entine's Day. Voluntary IM Program WRA sends delegates to section al and national conferences, and to play days at other colleges. District colleges are invited to attend play days held in White Hall. Women may use the bowling al leys, pool, play room, and bad minton court in White Hall, and the college tennis courts and golf course. The facilities of White Hall are available during the day when classes are not scheduled, and Monday through Saturday nights. A. schedule of plunge hours is posted on the bulletin board in the locker room on the ground floor. A lifeguard is always on duty when the pool is in use. Play nights are held every Sat urday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in White THE DAILY COLLEGIAN, STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA WSGA Outlines Women's Rules In Handbook The Women's Student Govern ment AsSociation has - published a handbook explaining the cur rent year's regulations for wo men students. According to WSGA rules, all upperclass women through the seventh semester will have 10 o'clock . permissions each night from Sunday through Thursday, and 1 o'clocks. for both Friday and Saturday nights. Eighth semester senior women have 11 o'clock permissions Sun day through Thursday nights. They also have 1 o'clock permis sions Friday and Saturday nights. Following freshman customs, freshman women will have 9:15 permissions from Sunday until Thursday. On Friday and Satur day nights they will have one 10 o'clock and one 1 o'clock per mission, to be taken either night. Training Permissions Other rules covering permis sions allow all upperclass women to take four special 11 o'clocks each semester. These permissions may be used for dating. Fresh man women will be granted four 10 o'clocks permissions, but they may not be used for dating. All women students are granted two 1 o'clock traveling permis sions' per semester. WSGA reg ulations permit all women living in dormitories to drive within a 20-mile radius of the College, pro vided they have signed out prop erly. Hall. During these hours the pool and all activity rooms are open. The executive board, elected by women students, is the governing body of WRA. It plans and ad ministers the over-all program. Officers of WRA elected last spring are Mable Marple, presi dent; Barbara Wallace, vice pres ident, Carole Avery, secre ta r y treasurer, Virginia Hinner, intra mural chairman, and Marie Wag ner, assistant intramural chair man. Post-Customs Hours Leonides Represent All Independents Women All independent women attending the College are members of Leonides, the organization for non-sorority women. Philotes, .wom en's social organization, chooses its members from Leonides. Leonides was reorganized from the Independent Women's Organ i- in 1948-49: A council composed of elected representatives from the 33 independent women's liv-, ing units governs Leonides. Coun cil meetings are open but only official.representatives can vote. Peterson Heads Leonides The primary purposes of Leoni des are to foster .a closer relation ship between independent wom en, to insure equal representation in student government, ,and to provide better social and athletic opportunities for its members. Vivian Peterson is president of Leonides. Other officers are Hilda Hogeland, vice president; Guyla Woodward, recording secretary; Gertrude Kreider, corresponding secretary; and Marilyn McComb, treasurer. 'Bids for Membership Philotes was organized in 1937 to unify and bring together non sorority coeds, to broaden their role in academic and social life, to stimulate their interest in scholarship and activities, to help Danks & Co. An All-College average of 1.0 is required before a coed may be pleeged. Although there is no limit on membership, 45 or 50 women usually are active members. Prexy Announces ME Scholarship A scholarship for mechanical engineering seniors has been es tablished by the Carbide and Car bon Chemicals Co. In announcing acceptance of the scholarship, President Milton S. Eisenhower said the award would provide $5OO annually to a student to be selected by the Department of Mechanical Engineering..
