5 Music Groups Open for Talent
Students with vocal or instru
mental training will find at the
College five musical organizations
which use tryouts as the basis
for membership.
The Penn State Blue Band is
composed of two units. The
marching unit, all men, which
plays at outdoor events such as
football games is composed of
about 100 musicians and is active
only during
. the first semester.
It marches at a record 170 steps
per minute, one of the fastest in
the country.
The Concert Blue Band is com
posed of about 90 men and wo
men students and presents con
certs during both semesters.
Members receive one college cre
dit for th e second semester's
work.
Tryouts for th e Concert and
Marching Blue Band will be held
Wednesday, Thursday, and Fri
day in 109 Carnegie Hall. Inter
ested students should sign up in
advance for tryout appointments.
The Symphony Orchestra is a
male and female organization
which presents several programs
during the year, featuring pre
classical through modern music.
One credit per semester is given
ryouts
Tryouts will be held Tuesday,
for symphony orchestra work.

The Chapel Choir is a mixed
group of about 120 students which
presents programs at the weekly
chapel services. Two hours of re
hearsal are held each week and
one credit is given per semester.
Tryouts will be held by arrange
ment in 216 Carnegie Hall Wed
nesday or Thursday.
Two other vocal musical groups
are organized on th e campus.
One is the Penn State Glee Club,.
an all-male •group which presents
several concerts and makes a
spring tour each year. Tryouts
will be held by appointments that
may be made early in the week
in 216 Carnegie Hall.
The second vocal group is the
Treble Singers,
a women's choral
group of about 130 members. The
group rehearses from 7 to 8:30
p.m. Wednesdays. Tryouts will
be given through apnointments
which may be made in 216 Car
negie Hall.
Outstanding music majors and
others active in music are eligible
for the Louise Homer Club, wo
men's music honorary. There are
about 30 members. The groups se
lects its members in the fall.

with musical activities, usher at
concerts, and work with Phi Mu
Alpha, men's music honorary, to
promote more interest in music.
Melathers of Phi Mu Alpha are
chosen from those outstanding in
some musical activity.
The group gives jazz concerts,
dances, sponsors a program over
WMAJ, and takes part in various.
Musical events.. Those interested
in joining must fill out applica
tions. They will be rushed and
voted on as in other honorary
groups.

hower and a talk by All-College
president John Laubach. Later
tonight men and women students
will meet in their dormitory units
for consultations with counselors.
Men and women students will
meet separately at 6:45p.m.
Tuesday for counselors meeting
according to the schools in which
they are enrolled. Tuesday even
ing all students will meet in stu
dent council groups.
Freshman men students will
meet at 8 p.m. Wednesday for dis
cussions relating to ROTC on the
campus. A sophomore ROTC meet
ing will be held - at 8 p.m. Thurs
day. Women students will meet at
6:45 p.m. Wednesday for a dis
cussion of WRA, Women's Rec
reation Association. All students
are invited to a starlight dance
in front of Old Main at 10 p.m.
Wednesday.
Entertainment and dancing is
Planned for all new students at
2 p.m. Saturday in the Temporary
Union Building. Fun night will
be held at 7 p.m. Saturday in
Recreation Hall. A College Chapel
service will be held at 11:00 a.m.
Sunday.
