Bedenk Quits
Football Staff
After more than 25 years of uninterrupted college coaching, Joe
Bedenk is giving up football.
However, the Penn State veteran will remain on the staff as
head baseball coach and professor of physical education.
Bedenk, who guided his 1952 diamond team to the District two
title and a berth in the College World Series, explained that it no
longer was feasible for him to
teach and coach two sports.
"Football," the one time all-
American said, "is a demanding
sport. It seemingly requires more
time every year. Baseball is a
sport which I can fit into my
teaching program much more eas
ily than football."
Bedenk, who joined the football
staff as line coach in 1929, filled
this position throughout his ca

he agreed to take over as head
coach for the ailing Bob Higgins.

Reds Take Gym Title
Russia's domination of Olympic
gymnastic competition was clear
cut and complete, according to
Gene Wettstone, Penn State coach
and judge at the 1952 Games.
Wettstone, who coached .Ameri
ca's 1948 team, said the Russians
utilized their amazing strength
to excellent advantage as they
swept both men's and women's
events. He said their compulsory
work was superb.

"The Home of Famous Brands"
first served under Hugo Bezdek,
succeeding Bez as diamond coach
in 1931, and remaining in football
as line coach - when Higgins took
over in 1930.
Penn State was noted for its
big, tough lines under Bedenk,
who had a major hand in the de
velopment of Leon Gajecki as an
all-America center in 1940 and
Steve Suhey as an all-American
guard in 1947.
He also was credited with being
one of the • most astute scouts in
Eastern college football, and his
reports played a notable part in
many upset victories over the
years.
Bedenk played on Bez's out
standing baseball and football
teams in the early twenties, and
in 1923 gained the football team
captaincy and a guard berth on
Walter Camp's all-America.
