PAGE FOURTEEN Lion Soccer, X-Country Practice to Begin Boaters Sport 11 Lettermen With eleven lettermen re turning, of which nine were first stringers last year, Coach Bill Jeffrey bids fair to turn out another top-notch soccer team as his kicking lads get practice underway today on the golf course. The amiable Scot Jeffrey was pleased with. what he called a "decent picture," but warned that the key positions held by gradu ated Captain Ron Coleman and expert left-footer J a y Simmons will be tough shoes to fill. Last fall the Lions had their "worst" season in several years, winning five, losing one and tie- ing two following championship teams the two prior years. The lone loss came 'at the feet of Ar my, but the collegiate soccer "Team of the Year," Temple, was held to a draw by the Nittanies. Jeff's returnees include the Philadelphia halfback trio Cap tain Kurt Klaus, Jack Charlton and Fran Follmer, Paul Dierks, Bob "Red" Harris, Bill Norcik, Ellis Kocher, Jack Pinezich, Don Shirk, Chuck Snyder and Hap Irvin. Norcik, Kocher, Pinezich, Shirk, Snyder and Irvin are front linemen. Dierks is a back and Harris a goalie. Jeffrey reports several good frosh prospects who, although not eligible for the varsity, should get plenty of seasoning. Nittany Coaches Of Varsity Teams Football—Coach Rip Engle; assistants. Captain Jack Horner, Lamont Smith, Red Hollen, Jim Hamill, John Chilrud, and Bob Roessler are veterans of the campaign last year which saw the Lions cop second successive IC4A honors and miss by a whisker an attempt to retain the 1950 National Collegi ate title.
