Conference
To Open
Problems of college chemistry
professors will be discussed at the
first meeting of the Pennsylvania
Conference of College Chemistry
Teachers which will open at the
College tomorrow afternoon.
Following tours of College lab
oratories in the afternoon, the
group will have a dinner at 6 p.m,
tomorrow at the State College
Hotel. Dr. Lawrence L. Quill, pro
fessor and head of the Depart
ment of Chemistry at Michigan
State College, will speak.
Dr. Quill, author of several
textbooks and associate editor of
Chemical Abstracts, will use as
his subject “Rambling Remarks
by a Rambling Chemist.”
Dr. George L. Haller, dean of
the School of Chemistry and Phy
sics, will welcome- the chemists
at the dinner, while Dr. W. C.
Fernelius, professor and head of
the department of chemistry, will
preside at the session.
Following greetings from Pres
ident Milton S. Eisenhower at
9am. Saturday, the chemistry
teachers will hear papers on var
ious phases of teaching chemistry.
Officers will be elected at a busi
ness meeting at 11:15 a.m. Sat
urday, prior to the final session
of the conference in the afternoon.
Stock Judging
Contest Slated
The annual livestock-judging
contest will be held by the Block
and Bridle Club Saturday, accord
ing to William Kramlich, chair
man of the judging contest com
mittee.
All contestants will judge eight
classes of livestock. Any student
may enter the competition, al
though only a few individuals
may meet the high qualifications
for being on a judging team,
Kramlich said.
Contestants will be divided in
to two groups: amateur, those
who have never taken livestock
judging courses; and professional,
for those who have taken Animal
Husbandry 3 or 4. Contestants in
the professional group will be re
quired to give reasons for their
placings in four of the eight
classes.
A 25-cent entry fee will be
charged all contestants. This
money will be kept within the
judging contest budget and used
solely for prizes.
Golf Course Opens
For Spring Season
The Penn -State golf course
opened Monday and will be open
for the rest of the school year,
Robert Rutherford, Jr., golf
coach, said yesterday.
The course is open daily except
Sunday mornings, Rutherford
said. The course opens at 1 p.m.

Conference to Meet
A conferen,ce. on 'human relations in the home, school, and
community will be held at the College tomorrow and Saturday.
The Pennsylvania Conference on Family Relations will meet
Saturday and will hold a luncheon meeting with the human relations
conference.

of lowa.-will speak at the com
bined meeting, to be held at noon,
in the Allencrest Tea' Room., His
topic will be “The Rule of the
Family .in Mental Health.”,
Featured speaker of the Penn
sylvania conference will be the
Rt. Rev. Msgr. John- O’Grady,
president of the . National Council
on Family Relations, and secre
tary of the National Conference
of Catholic Charities. His subject
will be “The Community’s Stake
in Family Life.”
Dr. William M. Smith Jr., pro
fessor of family relationships at
the College and president of the
Pennsylvania group, will join
with Dr.-Jessie Bernard, profes
sor of sociology, and Dr. Clifford
R. Adams, professor of psychol
ogy, in presenting a panel dis
cussion Saturday. The .subject • of
the -discussion will be “What’s
Penn State Doing in Marriage and
Family Research?” .

professor of child development
and family life extension, will
show and discuss films on family
life. The group will also discuss
the topic “Communities Act Jor
Family Life.”
