Bet the Cotton Bowl people are sorry now that they were in
such a hurry to pick Kentucky as one of the teams to play in their
game. The Wildcats now have four losses, and looked like anything
but bowl material in last weekend's game with Tennessee.
The Cotton Bowl folks were probably working on the assumption
that Kentucky would spring an upset on the Vols, and catapult
themselves into contention for na
tional honors. But the strategy
backfired, and they're stuck with
a mediocre ball club.

Bowl games supposedly were
created with the idea of bringing
together the top teams in the
country. Of the major New Years
Day clashes, • however, only the
Sugar Bowl . and possibly the
Orange Bowl will see unbeaten
teams meeting. And Georgia Tech
has a tie.
Maryland and Tennessee, both
unbeaten and untied, both real
powerhouse grid machines, and
both honest- to-goodness bowl
material, will meet in the Sugar.

The fabulous Rose Bowl as Pas
adena which caters to champions
of the Big 10 and Pacific Coast
Conference finds two once-beaten
clubs, Illinois and Stanford znedt
ing. Few doubt that Stanford is
the class of the coast despite last
week's loss to California, but the
way Wisconsin has been rolling
recently in the Big 10 one begins
to wonder if the Badgers aren't
the best in the mid-west.
And the proud Cotton Bowl
will pit Kentucky, four times de
feated, against an opponent that
will have at least two losses on
its record.
