WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1. 1951 )RMAN Th.. ie final men tion of the old, dead subject of a lot of old, dead starlings. You re member the starling war? How could, you miss it with all the banging away of all the amateur Hopalong Cassidys. • • Well, this is the, casualty report' as near as I can figure it to date. Nearly 1000 starlings were killed, wounded,- or missing in. action during the two-week period of hostilities.' The ' figure reached these astronomical proportions just recently . when The Local Police Force led his stalwart band against the birds in a "surprise at taelt.". . , The Local ' Police Foyce was ob served during one set of maneu vers' wearing hunting breeches and coat, directing volley after volley into the nimbly-dodging starlings." Apparently he means, or meant, business. rot - that I disagree with The Local Police Force on the overall subject of starlings. The birds are a nuisance. My landlady could talk to you for hours about what a nuisance they really are. They make •an ungodly' racket at all times,' and do .other unmention able things than no gentleman bird ;would ever think of doing. But . The Police Force is bark ing- up the wrong tree, so to speak, in trying to blast them from the skies, or trees as the case may be. The subject of Japanese Beetles can readily be discussed at this point.: It seems the starling eat them, friend, fried, parboiled, or raw. I would rather have starlings than bettles. I .'see by the Other Paper that the College is still making head lineS.,in absentia. Along the line, of beauty queens, the Other Paper also saw fit to note that Nyunt Nyunt Tin (Miss Tender Bud), Miss Burma in 1948, has "shocked admirers by re nouncing the world to become a religious hermit." The artidle then goes on to give explicit directions as to how to reach Miss Tin. . . . an austere hut on the site of the ruined town Dhammaceti, two miles south of the rail junction of Pegu." Apparently " Miss Tin is just renouncing the world a little bit. State Police raided a girly show in Milesburg the other night. They nauled in what appeared from the names to -be three men and two women on the charge of public indecency. Not only is it getting harder for a guy or girl to make a dishonest living, but its getting harder to find some kind of amusement that will provide the kind of good, clean fun that we all like. Why, I'd rather they close down the see-saws at the playground than the' girly shows. Industrial Ed. Dept.
