PAGE SIX Lion Track Team Competes In ICI-4A's Runners Face Stiff Trial Heats Today; Cornell Team Favorite Nittany cindermen today open a two-day stand in Phila delphia for the 75th annual IC-4A track championships to be held on Franklin Field. Rugged trial heats will be held in most events this after noon to determine entries for the finals scheduled for to morrow afternoon. Fo r the Lions, who lost to Navy and beat Pitt in dual com petition and won the four mile relay championship at the Penn Relays, the IC's are the windup of the season. The exception is that an y individual performers who may do well enough in the IC's tomorrow to merit a trip to th e national championships in Seattle, Wash., on June 16. Cornell Favorite Powerfully track- equipped Cornell is everyone's choice to take the team title won by Yale last year, but Seton Hall and Manhattan with their crack sprin ters and Georgetown with their strong distance runners must also be figured as threats. Last year the Lions finished sixth in team scoring largely on the strength of Jim Gehrdes' dou ble win in the 220 low-hurdles and the 120 highs. Vic Fritts scored with a second place in the high jump and Ted Roderer in the javelin and Chuck Drazeno vich in the shot took fifth places. Two Mile Run Today for the Lions, Bob Free bairn and Bob Gehman are listed for the mile run. Freebairn •hit his outdoor high against Pitt with a 4:16.6 clocking but has a good chance to win if he can clock around 4:13. At two miles the Lions have Bill and Don Ashenfelter, legen dary figures in Penn State dis tance running circles. Bill's big gest competition will come from Army's Dick Shea. Don has not been up to par this spring but he too can score in that event. State half-milers today are Bob Parsons and Johnny McCall. Both will be among a tough field, but "Wobbly Head" McCall is tough in the stretch and Parsons may show some of his high school greatness. Lockhart In 220 Bill Lockhart, a quartermiler by trade, is good at the shorter 220 but here again the strength of the field is against him. John Lauer was impressive in winning the 440 in 50.1 against Pitt but here too the field is strong. With the rumor that Cornell's "Flash" Gourdine will not corn pete—he was spiked last Satur day—Guy Kay's chances in the 220 low hurdles• are greatly im proved. Larry Johnson of Army is his other big worry. In the field for the Lions Rod erer, with a few more feet to his 208 throw against Pitt, can score high. Fritts and Jim Herb if they hit their life time peaks can both win the high jump tomorrow. Pole vaulter Owen Wilkinson meets a tough field in the pole vault as do mile relayers Lock hart, Lauer, Kay and McCall. Bob Roessler will go as fifth man. By JAKE HIGHTON Stickmen - Play Cornell Tomorrow Penn State's lacrosse team will conclude the 1951 season when it invades Cornell to do battle with the Big Red tomorrow. The Lions will be seeking re venge for last year's 9-7 setback received at the hands of the New Yorkers, who ended up the sea son with a poor 3-6 log. Coach Jim Smith, serving his second term as head coach of la crosse at Cornell, is having his troubles again this year. The New Yorkers have dropped a pair of contests to Hobart, 12-2 and 12-9. State, on the other hand, whipped the same club, 17-10: The Big Red has also been de feated by Mt. Washington La crosse Club, Maryland, Army, Syracuse, and RPI. Mt. Washing ton, Maryland, and Army really poured it on as Cornell suffered 16-1, 14-2, and 20-1 beatings from those clubs, respectively. Army, however, is a good bet to sur-1 plant Johns Hopkins as national ) collegiate champiorls. Lions Affer Sixth Penn State, on the other hand, will be gunning for its sixth vic tory, its fourth straight win. The Lions have come along fast since the game with the Maryland La crosse Club, which State took, -6. Coach Nick Thiel will probably open with the same starting ten that has run roughshod over all opposition lately. This team has scored no less than 37 goals in its last three outings. Ike Williams efends Title NEW YORK, May 24 (R)—Al though lightweight champion Ike Williams is going to have a tight squeeze making the 135 pound limit, the Trenton, N.J., fighter ruled a big 3 to 1 favorite to de feat Jimmy Carter of the Bronx in their 15-round title bout in Madison Square Garden tomor row night. The 27-year-old c h amp ion, making his first title defense in 17 months, started drying out to day. He won't take any liquids until after he weighs in at noon (11:00 EST) tomorrow. Ike weigh ed 135% today and expects to hit the 135 marker right on the beam. He labored through 15 rounds of gymnastics to sweat off pound age. If he doesn't make it at noon, he'll have until 1:30 to shed the surplus. If he can't make it, he'll forfeit his crown. The fight then will become a non-title affair and Carter will be recognized as the No. 1 challenger in New York. Della Tnu Delta 2 THE DAILY COLLEGIAN, 6TATE COLLEGE.
