SATURDAY, MAY 12, 1951. Martha Baltzell Is 27th May Day Queen When Martha Baltzell is crowned May Queen this afternoon, she will become Penn State's 27th May Day Queen. The first May Queen, Mildred Ride, was crowned on. May 23, 1914, in front of Woman's Buiding. That May Day was a charity affair, with a charge of 25 cents for reserved seats and 15 cents for general admission. Proceeds were contributed to a hospital fund. Although this- first May Day was planned as an annual affair, it was discontinued in the next several years and not revived un til 1921. • Holmes Field In 1921 ceremonies were again held on the lawn of Woman's Building, but in .1926- the -cere mony was moved to Holmes Field, and in 1927 to the front campus. Because of construction work there, the ceremony was again re turned to Holmes Field, where i has been held for the past two years. This year is the first since 1948 that the cermonies have been held in front of Old Main. Originally May Day was con ducted by the Department of Phy sical Education, but as the cere mony expanded, the major, re sponsibility was placed with the WSGA house of representatives. May Day Chairman Virginia Miller, former vice president of WSGA, is chairman of this afternoon's May Day cere mony. Barbara Sprenkle, past president of WSGA, will have the honor of crowning the queen. May Day has expanded into brie of the major spring activities on campus, with great crowds, in cluding many parents, attending the ceremony every year. Heralds, jesters, Maypole danc ers, members of the hemlock chain and honor arch, and attendants •are all a traditional part of May Day. . . Musical organizations partici pating in this year's program are Treble Singers an d the College Prep Band. Every year the question of whe ther the State College weather if, going to come through with a sunny, gay May Day causes a lot of headaches and bad nerves. In case of rain this afternoon's cere mony will be held in Recreation Hall. —The Way (Continued from page four) that I never have been and never could be (a Communist)." Student members of the forum committee wired Lerner that they still desired to have him speak, but that they lacked the funds to Pay his 'expenses, let alone the $3OO fee. 'Lerner replied that he would' 'forego the $3OO fee. Stu dent backing for Lerner seemed strong, and unless we are misin formed, the money will be raised to pay his expenses. . To replace Lerner on the Uni versity Memorial Forum the com mittee hes chosen none other than Sen.. Joseph McCarthy. The committee might find millions of Americans, who would contend that Lerner would better serve "to develop a citisen program for bringing distinguished speakers ' to the campus," which is the pur pose of the series. There are minions who die , agree with what the Wiscon sin senator has to say. But we cannot afford to allow anybody to interfere with his right to say it. We. especially dare not false a public forum away from a man on charges as flimsy • as thorn which have been made against Lerner. If being charged with being a Communist were sound enough reason for such MONNE - MIMES. Mail Hatter's Day Mi d, MIS 141411-411 ate. - 2 pm. Mother's Day Also Honors Housemothers Tomorrow is Mother's Day. For weeks radio announcers have been oozing, "How's Mother? Have you remembered . . .?" Those who read have seen the same question posed, "How's Mother?. Come in to our special sale, and choose a lovely . . ." During all this commercial propaganda, has it ever occurred to you that the phrase "how's Mother" sounds 'very much like "housemother?" HouSemother—that word can start a mental chain reaction faster than almost any other word in a campus vocabulary. Everyone at Penn State knows some routine housemother jokes, and every dorm-housed coed knows what she considers some routine housemothers. Housemothers Different Unknown to some is the fact that there is no stereotyped house mother, with a standard person ality and old-fashioned attitudes.' Every house .mother is as dis-. tinctively different as is our cam pus architecture. Because of the exercise of a strong women's student govern- I ment, housemothers are relieved of much disciplinary control. Their most important duties are not to conduct room inspec tion, check 'the sign -out sheets, or saunter through the lobby at 1 a.m. but to be available when need_ ed to lend advice.. Interest and Guidance - A dorm hostess, concerned with the health and happiness of "her girls" does many unnoticed things for their benefit. She offers them security, affectionate 4nter est, and mature guidance—need ed by every girl when away from home and parental say-so. The duties of housemothers and home mothers are closely paral lel, which brings us back to the subject at hand—Mother's Day. Just as mothers often do not receive due credit, except when publicly recognized, so gratitude toward housemothers and appre ciation of their adthirable work generally is somewhat lacking. Tomorrow is the day when the whole nation pauses to honor the greatness of mothers. And in cluded in this honor is the dormi tory, hostess, the housemother. action, the President of the United States, the Secretary of State, and countless other repu table people would also become ineligible. Charges of Communism are serious. People who make such charges—like Sen. Mc- Carthy—should be compelled to prove them. Lerner said he has accepted the invitation of the students "be cause it is important for students everywhere to have the chance for competition of ideas." Both Lerner and Sen. 1 1 4 c . ace scheduled to speak tomorrow. Th e competition should be keen. it should prove to be the kind of competition of ideas which is characteristic ' of American democracy. *MN as Ea* ler THE DAILY COLLEGIAN. STATE COLLEGE.
