"/"I..J.Eib/J.H. X , MAY 1, ivat Prof. Schug Guides Women Debaters Clayton S. Schug, associate professor of public speaking, this year celebrates his 20th anniversary as coach of the women's inter collegiate debate squad at the College. ', Women's debate has greatly expanded during this 20-year period. In 1931-32, there were just three members on the- squad, and only eight intercollegiate debatei were scheduled. This year there are 22 coeds on the squad, and about 82 debates have been scheduled throughout the debate season, Lois Pulver, women's debate manager, feels that debating is one of the most valuable activi ties on campus. "Debating helps to develop poise and the ability to think on one's feet. It also pro vides an added incentive to keep ing abreast of vrorld affairs, ' Miss Pulver said. She added that the trips which the team takes are lots of fun. Onen To All • Women's debate is open to all coed undergraduates at the Col lege. Tryouts are held at the be ginning of each semester. During recent years, such topics as na tionalization of basic industries, federal aid to education, labor management relations, 'increased presidential powers, and capital ism versus socialism have been debated. In the 20 years that Prof. Schug has been coach, the women's de bate squad has won many first places and championships in de bate and forensic tournaments. In 1950, the women's team won the title of Grand National wo men's debate champions at the Grand National Tournament at Mary Washington College, Fred ericksburg, Va. This year the wo men's affirmative team laced second in the Grand National "Big Ten." Throughout the debate season, members of the squad travel to various colleges to attend tourna ments or to debate individual schools.- Some of the colleges and universities against whom the women have debated are George Washington, Georgetown, Prince-1 ton, Temple, LaSalle, . Carnegie Tech, Duquesne, Bucknell, Le high, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, Michigan State, West Virginia,) Syracuse, Richmond, • Rutgers, Johns Hopkins, and Lafayette. College Avenue bates against many men's teams from other colleges, men and wo men from Penn State have never debated together on a mixed team. Last year, however, the women's team debated . against the College men's team. Prof. Schug recalls many in teresting anecdotes in his years as coach of women's debate. Once, he said, a coed who was scheduled for an exhibition debate at Rock view State Penitentiary became so excited over the prospect of debating before the prisoners that she forgot to take her notes along, and had to debate without them. The debate coach also recalls the time when a novice coed de bater piled 'a stack of notes on the speaker's stand .A sudden gust of wind from an open window scat tered the notes throughout the audience, leaving the bewildered coed in a rather embarrassing position. One of. Prof. Schug's favorite stories concerns a coed who was so nervous at debate tryouts that she broke down- completely. De- spite her tears, however, Prof. Schucr b "had a hunch" that she had the potentialities for be coming a debater. He kept her on the squad, and later she became one of the College's outstanding coed debaters. All members of the women's debate team are invited to join Delta Alpha Delta, local profes sional women's debate society. Every fall the society sponsors a tea to welcome new debaters, and in the spring ,sponsors an intra mural discussion on a current issue among coeds at the College.
