ONE MAN TEAM More than likely you've hearth numerous
tales of so-called one man teams. Usually they are merely over
ex*ggeiations of a certain player's value. But here- is an instance
where a one man team was actually the case. It occurred in last
year's intramural fraternity track meet, won by Alpha Gamma Rho
With total of 12 points. And, believe it or not, all 12 were garnered
by one man -- Chuck Wilson, a member of the varsity football and
boxing ;tearns.,Chuck gained 5 points for winning the shot put, 4 for
taking 'second in the 'loo.yard dash, and 3 for finishing third in the
broad jump. This guy makes even Jim Konstanty look like a piker.
ANOTHER COLD WAVE? —lf will be highly interesting to
see just what strategy Coach Doc Carlson will employ when he
bringF his Pitt cagers Rec hall Saturday. You may remember
that last year the good Doctor and his boys played a stalling gam e
which. State eventually won, 31 to 15: But since Pitt bowled State
over in the Smokey City two weeks ago, he may forego such a
move this year. However, the Lions have been mighty tough to
beat in Rec hall this season, as Carlsoh probably is well aware.
So who knows, another cold wave in the form of the deep freeze
may hit State College come Saturday night. Huh, as if the Nittany
Vale hasn't been cold enough this winter.
SHORT SHOTS IN SUNDRY DIRECTIONS A survey of the
records turns up the interesting .6.ct that Connie Mack was fined
$lOO in 1892. At last the story behind those A's contracts ,is out .
A note from former Collegian Sportswriter George Vadasz, informs
us that we erred in last week's column. We put Niagara Falls in the
New England league whereas it is actually in the Middle Atlantic
circuit ...Fran Rogel. former Nittany football ace, is now a military
policeman at Ft. Meade . . . It happened during the Don Maurey
match last Saturday and almpst went unnoticed ; Homer Barr's small
daughter wandered away from Mom and dropped in for a little visit
with her famous Dad. She watched the rest of the match from the
safety of Pop's lap.
DOWN MEMORY LANE The rejection by Penn State of a
bid to the Bradley basketball tourney led us to snoop into the past
and check on the last State team to enter a tournament. That , was
in 1942 when the Lions went to the NCAA tournament. That 1942
team won 17 of 19 games, the last 12 in a row, during the regular
Season. In the NCAA at New Orleans they got bounced by Dart
mouth, 44 to 39, but won the consolation game from Illinois by a
41-34. count. John Lawther was the coach and both present mentor
Elmer Gross, and his.assistani, John Egli, were members of the
team. Gross .scored 168 points to lead the Lions.
HATS OFF TO Former Lion runner Curt Stone for his victory
in the 10,000 meter race at the Pan-American games in Buenos Aires,
Argentina . . . Coaches Charley Speidel and Bill Jeffreys •for
,their
25 years of service to State. In this age Of "win or get out" such
records speak for themselves : Jim Herb, for keeping the indoor
IC-4A high jump title in the Lion's possession. Defending champ Vic
Fritts was hampered by a bruise and did not place.
Lamie Must Average 9 Points
To Tie One ,Se a ason Cage Mark
Captain Lou Lamie needs only
to average nine points in three re
maining basketball 'games to tie
the Penn State one season scor
ing, mark of 299 held by Marty
Costa.-
In 19 games, Lamie has poured
272 points through the hoop for
a 14.3 ,average. If Lamie. is to tie
or break the record, which was
set last season, chances are that
it won't be in Rec hail. The Lions
have only one remaining game
scheduled for the home court and
that comes this Saturday with
the Pitt Panthers._ providing the
opposition.
The Lions will travel to Mor
gantown, West Virginia for a re
turn game with the Mountaineers
on Monday and from there hop
down to Philadelphia to wind up
the season with Pe,nn on Wed
nesday.
Ted Panoplos continues to fol
low Lamie in the scoring totals
with 242 points in 20 games: Al
though Panoplos is 30 points be
hind Lamle, he has scored 11 more
field goals than the Lion cap
tain.
Tiny, McMahan. has moved up
thf third spot by virtue of
his spree ,in the last few games.
The 6-7 center has cut the cords
for 169 markers and a 8.5 aver
age.

- Hardy Williams follows close
