TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1951 'Ma' Gates' Visit Lasts 21 Years By GRETA WEAVER • Shorly before the end of last semester, the brothers (and pled ges) of Sigma Nu fraternity• were a pretty sad bunch. But not be cause of examinations. "Ma" Gates, housemother of the local chapter for 'over 21 years, col lapsed from a heart attack. Thirigs weren't the same with "Ma" not around. But by the en d of January, recovered, • "Ma" Gates had c and was back again with "her boys." "Ma," Mrs. Blandhe Gates, came to the 1 o c.a 1 chapter as housemother in the fall of 1929, as she says, "just until they could get someone else." Bu t. "Ma" stayed to become endeared to the hearts of over 600 brothers in the years that followed. Her many acts of understanding and her wise advice are proof of her gen uine love for boys and her devo tion to her "adopted" family. Mrs. Gates is herself the mother of ten children. "I had six boys myself so a few hundred or so more only made life that much more worth while for me," she says. White Star Is Favorite Gift "Ma's" most treasured gift from her "sons" is the White Star of Sigma Nu, which she received on her tenth anniversary with the fraternity. Of all the women who wear . the pin of Sigma Nu, none could be more proud of it than she is. "When I die that pin goes with me," she tells the members. During the wa r the chapter gave its house over to the Navy, and Ma snent what she says were two of the loneliest years of her life. She read and re-read the chapter's newsletters, telling of the whereabouts of her boys in the far corners of the globe. "Ma" remembers a 11 of the chapter's alums who have gone on to distinguish themselves in professions or business. "I could always spot the ones that would . NOW! Lectures Pledges "Ma" enjoys kidding the pled ges when th e y neglect pledge dutieS. And she really knows how to deliver sermons to those who break the rules. A few years ago at Christmas time, the chapter presented her with a radio for her room. Never at a loss for words when she is bragging to others about the men, she is always unable to say any thing when she is brought from the. kitchen to receive her Christ mas gift. "Ma" watched in silence as her -resent was being unwrapped. As the radio was brought out of its 2arton, she stood staring at it, un able to speak. Suddenly she turned, and with tears rolling down her• wrinkled cheeks, she said, "Thank you, boys . .. thanks ::or everything." But it is to "Ma" herself that the Sigma Nu's give their thanks, for she has been more than just a fraternity housemother to al most a generation of Sigma Nu's ... she has become an institution. The purpose of the cup as stated by WRA is "to give recog nition to teams participating in all the WRA activities, which are not necessarily the strongest con tenders for the Intramural Cup; to show appreciation for their co operatlin for continued partici pation in all the activities." 'The cup will be awarded in the spring to the team who haS had the largest total of members par ticipating in intramural sports, acting in the capacity of timers and scorers, officiating the intra mural contests, and participating actively. in the club program. Statistics on which the award will be based are those derived from WRA attendance cards. Originally, a cup was to have been awarded for the fall se mester, but the WRA intramural board at a meeting Thursday night decided not to make the award since many of the partici pating groups knew nothing about the award, and had not filled out the necessary attend ance cards.
