Wrestlers Seek Third Wm At Pitt
Penn State’s matmen will take on a vastly improved Pitt crew
under coach Rex Peery in Pittsburgh this weekend. Coach,Charlie
Speidel’s wrestlers will be out to make it three in a row this season.
Captain Homer Barr, the “People’s Choice,” is working on a
personal win streak of 18 straight
dual meet victories without a de
feat. His Panther opponent in the
heavyweight class will be John
Nsarik, who has thus far lost two
matches.
Last year, Penn,State adminis
tered a 32-0 defeat to the not-so
ferocious ' Panthers, who were
then in their first season of wrest
ling since the sport was suspend
ed for the 1939-40 season.
Peery doesn’t expect to make
many changes in the lineup that
defeated Kent State last weekend.
He will probably go with John
ny George in 123; Ray Capelli,
130; Harold Miller, 137; Frank
Skirpan, 147; Captain Jim' Conk
lin, 157; Marven Krauss, 167; and
Joe Kane, 177.
Speidel will probably also stick
with his winning lineup, although
there is a possibility that the
elimination bouts may change it
at the last minute. v
Johnny Reese will most likely
see action in 123; Dean Harbold,
130; Don Maurey, 137; Don Frey,
147; Bill Santel, 157; Joe Lemyre.
167; and Mike Rubino, 177.
Of that lineup, Reese, Harbold
and Maurfey have been defeated
once in the two Nittany victories.
Pitt, Lion Freshman
Grapplers Meet Sat.
Coach Charlie Ridenour’s fresh
man wrestlers will seek their sec
ond consecutive victory when
they journey tor Pittsburgh Sat
urday ~ to engage the Panther
freshmen in a match . that will
start at 1:45.
In meeting the Pitt yearlings
the Lions wil probably start the
same lineup that “brought home
the bacon” against Lehigh. When
State defeated Lehigh, the Lions
gained an easy 23-11 decision as
they won four of their five
matches via falls.
In the 123-lb. division Riden
our, will "Start with Doug Cassel,
who dropped a decision to Tom
Tooker in his last match. At 130
will be Dick Lemyre, winner of
his last match with a pin in the
first quarter. In the 147-lb. class
will be Jerry Maurey, who also
won his initial match with a fall
in the first period. The rest of the
lineup follows: 157—8i1l Krebs;
167—Budd Whitehall; 177—Dick
Phelan; and at the heavyweight
spot, Joe Pascarella.

THE DAILY COLLEGIAN, STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA
Unbeaten In Dyaf Meets
Brenner Stars As
Dorm 39 Wins 4th
Both independent and fraternity
fives saw action Tuesday night in
intramural basketball with Dorm

scoring 10 points, defeated Dorm

took number three by downing
the Wildcats, 29-18, and the Lions
edged the Little Five, 23-21.
Alpha Tau Omega and Phi Sig
ma Delta of league E won their
third straight by downing Chi Phi
and Alpha Chi Sigma; Beta Theta
Pi topped Pi Lambda Phi, 27-12.

Gettysburg Faces
Lion Cagers Sat.
When Penn State’s basketball
team entertains Gettysburg Sat
urday night in Rec hall, the Liohs’
will attempt to capture their first
Saturday win on home hardwood.
Although the Lions will prob
ably be installed as pre-game
fayojdtes, the hot-and-cold Bullets
cannot be taken lightly.
Last season Elmer Gross’ squad,
heavily favored, fell before the
unpredictable Bullets’ last quar
ter barrage, 66-65.
With nine veterans in his lineup,
Coach Hen Bream’s cagers have
broken even in their first eight
games. After'losing to Pitt, 65-50,
the Bullets romped over Johns
Hopkins, 86-68, and Mt. Saint
Mary’s, '7B-63.
Powerful LaSalle and Cornell
defeated the Gettysburgers in
their next'two outings, but the
ambitious Bullets threw a scare
into the Explorers before bowing
70-65. Cornell walked off with an
easy 82-45 victory.
Just what to expect from
Gettysburg this weekend is any
one’s guess. You can not specu
late on a team that came within
six points of beating La Salle on
the Explorers’ court and then two
nights later fall easy prey to a
visiting Cornell team.
Although Bream is without the
services of twice All-Stater
Bucky Harris, high-scoring Harry
Pure, and Ross Sachs, he still can
count on Bob O’Brien, who tossed
in 224 points last year, and Hank
Belber, a fancy playmaker and
set-shot artist.
Coach Joe Tocci’s freshman
team will try to get back on the
win trail when it takes on Frost
burg Teachers College in a pre
liminary to the varsity game at 7
o’clock.

Gymnasts Debut Against
N. Carolina, February 3
The great pile of paraphernalia to the rear of Rec hall is grad
ually, if stubbornly, beginning to mold the men who use it into an
other Gene Wettstone gymnastic edition for Penn State.
Wettstone, starting his 14th year at the helm of the Lion tumbl-
ing fortunes, has one of the tough
est assignments of his career ,as
he attempts to keep one eye on
the schedule and another on the
draft, reserves, etc.
Draft-Hit
Already the victim of reserve
units to the tune of three tum
blers and a parallel-bars man, the
veteran coach is anxiously await
ing his first meet with North
Carolina on Feb. 3, hoping that
the draft will not make too deep
an inroad into his squad—for that
meet anyway. The Tarheels are.
coached by Bill Meade, former
Nittany gymnast.
The 1951 team.will center about
Captain Rudy Valentino, last
year’s Eastern Intercollegiate
tumbling champion, and Dave
Benner, who came in fourth in
the National Championships.
When the Nittany Lion cagers
meet American university on the
Rec hall court Feb. 21, the Lions
will be trying for their 13th win
in' 15 contests with the Eagles.

Swimmers Meet
Cornell Saturday
After being defeated last week
end by two of the East’s, best,
star-studded Rutgers and Col
gate, Lion swimmers will play
host to a less glittering cast of
Cornell tankmen Saturday after
noon in Glennland pool.
Although the Big Red mermen
scored a 56-19 season opener vic
tory over thrice-beaten Univer
sity of Pennsylvania, the present
Cornell aggregation does not pos
sess the same strength as the
squad which last season trimmed
Pe'nn State, 53-22.
The Cayuga watermen show
power in the freestyle dashes
and in the breaststroke but are
weak in two of Coach Gutteron’s
fortes—the 440-yard freestyle and
the 200-yard backstroke.
