(Continued from page one)
emphasizes every fourth or fifth
word she speaks, and as a result
some of her best lines in the first
act are lost.
Otherwise Miss Tilles performs
well and is beautifully at ease on
the stage.
Two of the brightest spots in
the entire play are Joseph Bird’s
portrayal of “Kit Carson” and
Charles Schulte’s “Nick.” Bird,
who has the complete attention of
the audience whenever he’s on,
seems almost too good for an ama
teur production, while Schulte, in
addition to keeping the dialogue
moving, manages to keep his Ital
ian-American accent throughout
the five acts.
Charles Williams played “Tom”
last night, 'and Howard Mason
will take over the part tonight.
Mason, judging from the Wednes
day rehearsal, doesn’t have the
stage presence of Williams, but
both do an adequate job.
In the principle supporting
roles, Fred de Wit is convincing
as the cop who wants to know
what’s the matter with the world,
and Nick Morkides, as a would-be
comedian, both acts and dances
well.

Surprises—
Jtiehard Harsch gives an excel
lent .portrayal of “Dudley Bost
wick,” a confused, not-too-intelli
gent young man, but his girl
friend, Patricia Hale, as “Elsie
Mandelspiegel,” seems to. have
been miscast. Miss Hale is sophis
ticated and very well-dressed
not what one would expect in an
Elsie Mandelspiegel.
A longshoreman with an Irish
brogue, “McCarthy” is played by
Robert Maitland. Like Schulte
as “Nick”, Maitland doesn’t lose
his accent, which makes the role
more realistic.
Peter Twaddle is Vice Squad
Chief “Blick”. Twaddle, weak in
his first-act appearance, improves
considerably later on. '
Others in the cast, all of whom
perform well are David Schulte
as an “Arab”, Joseph Marro as
Willie; Donald Barton as the
newsboy; Mesrop Kesdekian as
the drunkard; Stanley Ginsburg
as “Wesley”; Corinne Mittleman
as “Lorene”; Miriam DeWitt as
“Mary L.”; John Price as the
sailor; Kathleen Aagaard as
“Killer”; Mary Ann Tyo as
“Anna”; Constance Weinsweig as
“Killer’s side kick”; Elinor For
