For Leading
_X -Country-Honors
The winner of tomorrow's meet between Chick Werner's Lion harriers and the charges
of Michigan State's Karl Schlademan will probably be top choice for national hill-and-dale
honors.
Both teams scored easy victories in their opening meets. Werner's thinclads ran rough
shod over the marathoners Of
Pittsburgh and Cornell, while
Michigan State had little trouble
taking Ohio State and Purdue in
to camp.
State, a perennial Eastern lead
er in the hill-and-dale sport, will
field a veteran team against the
highly-touted Spartans. With one
exception, Dudley Foster, the
only member of the team who
isn't a senior, the team is the
same one that represented Penn
Stae in cross country last year_

Bill and Don Ashenfelter, Al
Porto, Bob Freebairn, Jack St.
Clair, Dudley Foster, Bill Gorapn,
and Bob Parsons will carry the
State colors against the Spartans.
Michigan State, last year's
NCAA champion and the first
team to win the triple crown in
cross country when they swept
the the NCAA, senior AAU, and
1C,4-A titles in 1948, are again
rated as one of the top harrier
teams in the nation
Although the Spartans have
lost most of the runners that gave
them the top position in the
marathon sport, they will be
paced by Warren Dreutzler and
Don Makielski, two of the top
cross country men in the nation.
Dreutzler, Makielski Tough
Dreutzler, NAAU Steeplechase
champion, and Makielski will be
the Spartans one-two punch.
Francis Carey and Dick Roberts
are the only othei returning let
termen. Spartan newscomers are
Wayne Scutt, John Walter, Walt
Scoenegge, and Jerry Zerbe.
While Michigan State may have
the edge as to outstanding niadi
vidual performers, the Lions seem
to have the edge in balance.
Dreutzler or Makielski will be
rated as the ones to beat for in
dividual honors. Bill Ashenfelter,
tomorrow's captain, who copped
first place against Pitt and Cor
nell, will be State's No. 1 choice
to beat out the Spartan duo.
