Both State, Nebraska Seek To Regain
Winning Ways In Today's Encounter

Both Penn State and the University of Nebraska will be trying
to regain their winning ways when they clash in an inter-sectional
battle before a record sellout crowd of 40,000 in Memorial StadiUm.
Kickoff time is 2 p. m. Central time (3 p. m. EST.)
Victors over Georgetown in their opener, the Lions have drop
ped two straight to Army and Syracuse. Nebraska is a two touch
down favorite to win today'. The
Cornhuskers opened. their cam
paign , by tying a strong Indiana
squad, 20-20, and defeated Min
nesota, 32-26, in their .second
contest. Last week. however,
they fell before a surprisingly
good Colorado team, 28-19.
This is the third time the
Lions and Cornhuskers have
met, and the first. time Penn
State has played in Lincoln.
Penn State won the first game,
20-0, in 1920, and scored a 22-7
victory in the second game of
the series last year.

Despite their record of one
win, a loss and a tie, the Corn
huskers are, however, much
stronger than the team the
Lions bested last year. Coach Bill
Glassford fields a squad dominat
ed by experienced seniors. but
the biggest gun in the Nebraska
balanced-T attack is sophomore
Bobby Reynolds, the amazing
one-man gang.
To date, the previouslY unher
alded 19 year old, 175-pound
speedster has rolled up 493 yards
in 53 attempts, and scored 8
touchdowns and 5 . extra points to
account for 53 of Nebraska's 71
points. A four-ply threat, Rey
nolds handles the punting chores
for the Cornhuskers, averaging
40 yards per boot. passes, and
catches passes.
Reynolds has a pair of fast
stepping running mates in vet
eran halfback Bill Mueller. and
sophomore fullback Bill Wing
ender. Nebraska's passing punch
is provided by quarterback Fran
Nagle, who has completed 16 of
45 attempts for 194 yards and 3
touchdowns.
Nittany Coach Rip Engle will
stick - with the same lineups he
used against Syracuse last week.

cause of a sprained ankle. Vet

but Engle has not decided if the
Munhall senior will start.
Defensively the Lions will be
out to stop the sallies of Rey
nolds, while the passing of Quar
terbacks Vince O'Bara and Dick
Itoerber is expected to play an
important role in Engle's plans.

In IM swimming yesterday af
ternoon Phi Sigma Kappa out
scored Sigma Chi, 32-9; Delta Sig,
ma Phi swamped Sigma Pi, 30-9;
and Pi Kappa Alpha edged Beta
Sigma Rho, 23-18.
George Hamilton, DSP's "her
culean swimmer," showed , cham
pionship form as he sparked his
team to victory with a triple tri
umph. Hamilton shattered the
60-yard backstroke record, being
clocked in 39.2 seconds. The old
record of 39.4 seconds was set in
'49 by Gene Kolber.
Golf Tourney Begins
The initial Golf Medal Totir
:lament will begin today with
18 holes to be played. The
tourney will be concluded, bar
ring unforeseen incidents, with
another 18 holes Sunday. Sep
arate awards will be given to
both the fraternity, and the in
dependent victors.

Revamped Soccer
Squad Tests Navy
A hastily patched up Nittany
Lion soccer team will take the
field today at Annapolis in an at
tempt to extend an undefeated
streak to 18 games.
Two regulars will not be in the
liin eup; Joe Lane, center forward
and leading scorer, who has tal
lied nine goals in two games, and
Gus Bigott, left wing. Lane was
injured in the Western Maryland
game and his ankle has not re
sponded to treatment. Bigott is
sidelined by a boil on the instep
of his left foot.
The changes made necessary by
the loss of these men will result
in the switch of sophomore half
back Frank Follmer to the center
spot vacated by Lane. Another
sophomore, Ed Smith, will move
into the starting platoon at right
wing. Veteran Clarence Buss will
switch to. Bigott's left wing posi
tion.
An additional bit of gloom was
tacked on Coach Bill Jeffrey's
long list when fullback Bill
Yerkes pulled up lame following
Wednesday's scrimmage. Al
though he will play on Saturday,
Yerkes effectiveness will no doubt
be cut down somewhat.
Today's meeting with Navy will
be the second since the current
unbeaten string was begun. The
Middies were the last team to de
feat a Lion squad. That loss was
incurred early in the 1948 season.

Leads Bisons
Coach Earl Bruce's Lion cubs
scored in both of the firstperiods
in last night's arc game at Lewis
burg, and led Bucknell 13-0 in
the early minutes of the second
half.
After receiving the kickoff the
baby Bisons couldn't gain, and
quick kicked to the State 38
yard line. On the second play,
Jimmy Finn picked up 18 yards
to the Bison 44. Nat Yanosich
sparked the drive from there, and
drove .over for the TD.
In the second period Bucknell
drove to the Lion 33, but Wayne
Wolfkeil intercepted a fourth
down pass and raced 67 yards for
the second State TD. Minana con
verted, and State led, 13-0.
