Three 1950 engineering gradu
ates and one undergraduate won
$25 awards in the 1949-50 com
petition of. the Engineering
Undergraduate Award and Schol
arship Program sponsored by
James F.. Lincoln Arc Welding
foundation, Cleveland.
The two winners in mining en
gineering were Robert W. Coop
er, New Bedford, Pa., and Edwin
P. Sheriff, Morrisdale, Pa.
"Design of Wrecker Boom"
was the title of Cooper's paper;
Sheriff wrote on "The Design,
Fabrication, and Assembly of an
All Welded Conveyor-Pan Car
rier.*
James N. Sebastian, Locust
Gap, .Pa., and Harry F. Bennett,
Johnstown, Pa., were winners in
civil engineering. Sebastian wrote
on "Design of an Overhead Des
tination Sign for a Highway In
tersection.' Bennett, a sophio
more, wrote on the "Design of
a Welded Ship Gangway."
The program, open to_all en
gineering undergraduates
throughout the country, gave
awards to engineers in 40 dif
ferent colleges and . universities.

Religious Orientation
Religio — us meetings and services have been scheduled
for next week to orient new students into the religious
activities on and off campus.
LSA Boasts
New Chapter House
The Lutheran Student associa
tion, organized in conjunction
with the Grace Lutheran church
in State College, carries on its
activities in a newly-completed
student house at 412 W. College
avenue.
The house includes a fellow•
ship hall where large meetings
may be held; facilities for volley
ball, basketball, and table ten
nis; a kitchen, locker rooms,
council room, lounge, chapel,
and offices.
LSA activities last year were
the annual smorgasbord dinner,
square dances, baking socials,
talent showS; hikes, and a 'min
strel show.
Rev. Edwerth E. Korte is the
campus pastor. Officers of the
organization are Raymond Rice,
president; Donald - Love, men's
vice-president; Ruth Knoebel,
women's vice-president; Helen
Olshanshy, secretary; and Thom
as Smith, treasurer.

Chapel Services Begin
Regular Schwab Auditorium

dress by the Rev. Prank A. Sharp,
an officer of the Northern Baptist
Convention.
The non-denominational serv
ices, traditional at the College, are
open to all students and their
guests. James T. Smith, newly-ap
pointed College chaplain; Geor6
Ceiga, organist, and Maynard
Hill, tenor, will assist in Sunday's ,
service.
The Reverend Sharp, who is di
rector, of the. Department of Uni
versity Pastor and Student work
for the Northern Baptist Conven
tion, will meet Sunday afternoon
at 2:30 with the Roger Williams
Cabinet at 'the University Bap
tist Church,. and will speak at the
church for the Roger Williams
Fellowship that evening.
Eisenhower To Speak
President Milton S. Eisenhower
will speak to freshmen on "Reli
gion at Penn State" Monday at
7:30 p.m. in 304 Old Main. Dr.
Eisenhower's talk will inaugurate
a series of talks for freshmen ,
sponsored by the Penn State
Christian Association.
. Dr. J. Bertram Kessel, assistant
professor of physical education,
will open a similar PSCA-spon
sored series for sophomores with
a talk entitled "Let's Get Ac
quainted." Dr. Kessel will speak
on Wednesday, also in 304 Old
Main at 7:30 p.m.
The series will 'continue
through October. Other speakers
scheduled for either or both series ,

Three cabin retreats have been
planned by the Christian associ
ation. Frosh men will use the
PSCA cabin facilities on Sept.
23, freshman coeds on Sept. 30,
and all new sophomores and new
upperclassmen in a mixed group
on Oct. 7.
Convocation Scheduled
An inter-religious convocation
will be held for all students Sun
day at 6:45 p.m. in Schwab Audi
torium.
Sponsored by the student
groups of town churches and the
Penn' State Christian Association,
the convocation will include talks
by President Milton S. Eisen
hower and Luther Harshbarger,
executive secretary of PSCA.
Representatives of the State
College churches will conduct the
religious service. -Ministers of
local congregations will be in- .
troduced.
Following the convocation,
open houses will be held at all re
ligious foundations and churches
in the borough.
Purchases Head Named
Allen C. St. Clair was named
new director of Purchases for the
College. St. Clair, who was
appointed during the summer,
replaces Harold W. Loman.
St. Clair was purchasing agent
for Lord and Taylor of New York
for the past 12 years.
