Dr. Eisenhower traced the his
tory of education in America
through the principles of Thomas
Jefferson, found in the charter
of the University of Virginia,
th e founding of the • Penn
sylvania State College as the
Farmer's High School, and the
creation of the College in 1863,
following the passage of the Land
Grant Act in 1862. The purpose
of the College today, he said, is
to proVide a liberal and practical
education for increased numbers
of young people, at lower cost,

stressed the vast Ilucational
opportunities available to Penn
Staters. He pointed out that
nearly 3000 courses are available
to students, and that the College
is fourth in the nation as a center
for -government research.
