-. - ..).11,4'1.,:dvi8LR 13, 1950 Frosh, Sophs Can Enter Politics Through Lion/and State Parties Politically minded freshmen and sophomores will , have - , .a chance to , get into student govern ment at Penn State when the campus parties, Lion and State, issue calls for their first clique meetings. Besides the class offices, open to the frosh and sophs, the new comer to campus will be able to break into politics when the two parties hold elections for their •clique officers, The Lion party, currently in power after a clean sweep in the Spring elections, holds elections for freshman and sophomore clique presidents, vice-presidents and secretary-tresurers. These six officers are responsible for the running of the Fall election when class officers are chosen. Bulk of Work In addition to the elected clique officers, the entire machine :wings into the campaign, but the frosh and sops are depended upon to do the bulk of• the work. Campaign managers and publicity men are appointed by the new clique °Moots., High spot of the campaign comes with daily visits to living units during meals when candidates get a chance to speak to the voters. After the clean sweep the Lion party made in 1949, things looked dark for the State party. Signs of re vival showed in last year's Fall election, when the Statemen swept all six frosh and soph class offices, 13ut the Lions came in this year's Spring race and took all six class offices and the three All- College offices, causing a minor "revolt" in the rank of the State party. 'Men high in the State party have stressed that they are look ing for new blood to join forces with the more experienced men and women in the State party and come up with an entirely new setup that can regain some of the power the Lion party has annexed in the past two years. These policy decisions are then presented to the clique meetings for approval. Only clique Mem bers are eligible to vote for clique officers, but the entire school is eligible to vote for All-College officers in the Spring, and for their respective class officers wheneve,r the elections take place. Clique Cards Clique membership cards are issued after the student attends two meetings. Heads of both parties have stressed that any student,_wheth er fraternity, sorority or indepen dent, is eligible to run for any office if his qualifications suit him or her for the job. n.
