Hoping to get back on the win

squad meets Georgetown this af-.
ternoon at 2 o’clock on the Bea
ver Field clay.
The Lion netmen, after two
straight victories on the home
courts, encountered some bad
luck on their trip South earlier
this week. Navy walloped the
netters at Annapolis, 8-1, and the
Maryland Terps spirited rally nip
ped them, 5-4, at College Park.
Captain Owen “Sonny” Landon
will play in the lead-off spot, Dick
Wieland at number two, Jim Ho
well, number three, Mark Bor
land, number four, Spence Boyer,
number five, and Ed Davis at slot
six.
Powells and Wieland will be
State’s number one doubles’, duo
with Landon and either Davis or
Boyer number two, and Bill Wood
and Davis or Boyer at notch three.

in, the nation today.
The Nittany thinclads will go
after their first win of the sea
son in a meet with Michigan
State this afternoon at East Lans

last night, Coach Werner express
ed belief that his boys would
give a good account of them
selves
"But for lis to win," he said,
■"our boys will have to turn in
better performances than they
• have ever done before."
The Michigan team is loaded
again this year as" they have been
for the past. few seasons. With
such men as Warren Druetzler,
Bill Mack, Jack Dianetti and
Bill Makielski to call on, the
Spartahs will.be tough to top.
Following today’s meet, the
Lions, will return home for a
dual matph w;ith Navy and a tri
angular meet with Pittsburgh and
W. Virginia.
Colgate had an undefeated sea
son in 1886,: when ■ the Maroon
team won both games of its first
season, and there have been five
seasons when the Red Raiders lost
one game.

Hoping to regain the batting
eyes they lost somewhere between
the game with Gettysburg and the
Lafayette fray, the Nittany nine
will play a doubleheader with
West Virginia this afternoon at
Beaver Field. Game time is • 1:30
o’clock.
The Mountaineers have a record
of four wins and nine defeats. The
southerners have lest all their
away games this season.
Penn State has won only one
game away from Beaver Field, an
8-6 decision over Georgetown at
Washington, D.C.
Coach Joe Bedenfc would like
to see a little better showing at
home, too. Of the six home games
thus far, four have been wins,
with the other two showing State
on the low end of the score.
Probably moundsmen, for the
Lions, will be Bill Bair and Dal
ton Rumberger. Ted Topper will
start one game for West Virginia.

stickmen of Syracuse on Orange’s
home field. .
The Lions will be after their
\second win of the season while
Syracuse will be gunning for win
number eight.
The Orangemen, who- rank
among the cream of the crop in
lacrosse circles, point at their de
feat of pernnialy strong RPI as
proof of their powers. The Syra
cusians only defeat came at the
hands of another lacrosse power
house, Virginia, earlier this sea
son.
In their last outing, the Lions
downed Western'Maryland, ! 7-4.

Golfers Advance
In Sectional Play
WEST POINT, N.Y., May 5
Penn State passed its first hurdle
in defense of its three-year EIGA
round-robin golf tourney here
this afternoon by defeating Army,
4 to 3.
Army at one time held a three
point advantage but wins by Cap
tain Tom Smith, Jim Yerkes, Joe
Durniak and Ray Artz gave the
Nittany linksmen their winning
edge.
Penn State will meet Cornell
tomorrow morning and Pittsburgh
in the afternoon.
IM Softball Continues
First flight play continued in
the intramural softball leagues
with four games completed Thurs
day night.
The Ramblers topped the For
esters, 7-5, in the independent
tournament. In the fraternity cir
cuit Phi Epsilon Pi outslugged
Kappa Sigma, 12-7, and Alpha
Chi Rho edged Sigma Alpha Mu,
12-11, in another slugfest.
Phi Kappa Sigma banged out
a 12-8 victory over Theta Kappa
Phi after the teams had tied the
previous night.
