Two of Penn State's entries in the National Collegiate Boxing Tournament, which opens at Rec Hall tomorrow afternoon have drawn byes. The other three will step into the ring either tomorrow afternoon oi' evening. - By virtue of their byes, the Lion's Eastern champion, heavyweight Chuck Drazenovich and aggresive 135-pound John Albarano automatically advance into the semi-finals of the tourney Frank Gross, at 145, opposes Eldon Long of Washington State in a quarterfinal match while in another quarterfinal meet, Pat Heims, State's 155-pound repre-_ sentative drew Gordon Peresich, of Louisiana State, as his oppon ent. Also scheduled to make his in augural appearance in the tour ney will be the Lion's light heavy, Jack Bolger. He'll trade, leather with Carl Maxey, a Gonzaga Uni versity battler. Vying for national boxing hon ors in the' three-day Rec Hall show will be 57 collegians from 16 colleges and universities from all over the United States. OPENS AT 2 P. M. The preliminary round of com petition is scheduled to get under- way at 2 p.m.,tomorrow. Four teen bouts are" on tap' for the afternoon followed by eleven in the evening, starting at 8. Drazenovich, in his first quest for' an NCAA crown, will, step into the ring Friday night against Blackie Howell, Southern champ ion from L.S.U. Howell,' a sophomore who tips the scales at 190, owns a 7-2 rec ord for the season just concluded. The six-foot-one battler annexed his Southern title last Saturday: One of his two losses came at the gloves of Syracuse's Marty Crandell. Albarano's opponent.. on Friday will be Pacific Coast champion, Everett Conley of Washington State. Conley, who's season log shows seven wins against a lone setback, is also a soph. ROUGH ASSIGNMENT The roughest opening bout assignment falls to Penn State's 175-pound Jack Bolger. Bolger will step into the squared circle against Pacific, Coast crown wearer, Carl Maxey of Gonzaga. Long, a junior from Wash ington State, sports a mediocre four and three record, losing twice to Leonard Walker of Idaho. Eleven matches will form the program which will be given all the Inter-collegiate trimmings. Eight inter-fraternity and three independent bouts will be con tested for championship honors. DU and SAE led the fraternity groups going into the semi-finals last night, with 57 and 55 points. DU advanced three men into the finals. Dick Dietrick squeezed by Phil Cloud, Pi Kappa Phi, with a 6-5 decision in the 165-pound class: Vince Cavanaugh earned his way by pinning Dick Blythe, also of Pi Kappa Phi. Tile third finalist will be Ed Sweeton who ,defeat• ed - Jim Ewing, SAE, 5-2. Valentino Scratched From Gym Tournament Bouncing Rudy Valentino, State's Eastern Intercollegiate tumb ling champion, will not compete in the National Intercollegiate Gym nastic Tournament at West Point Saturday. Valentino is still suffering the effects of a sprained wrist, injured prior to the Temple-Penn State duaLmeet more than three weeks ago. Although he performed well en nigh to cop the Eastern title despite the wrist, he will not risk further injury by competing in the nationals, his coach Gene Wettstone said yesterday. Penn State will send four men to the competition, howeve r. Sophomore Dick Spiese, who tied for third place with Syracuse's Joel Baba on the parallel bars in the Easterns; Dave Benner, a junior constantly improving on the side-horse, and rope-climbers Lee Peina and Al Christie will leave . State College Friday for West Point. Perna tied for second place in the Easterns with a climb in 3.9 seconds. The quartet has been drilling on Rec Hall paraphernalia last week and this in preparation. Wettstone has hopes that the Lions may be able to place in the top six in their events. He listed Perna's chances in the rope-climb As definitely promising, and Benner, Christie, and Spiese as possible placers. Spiese's task will be the tough est. Parallel-bar competition is loaded with talented performers like Army's Carl Brunson, winner of the Easterhs in that event. On the rope-climb, however, one man, Leo Minotti of Syracuse who climbed once in 3.5 seconds, is a definite standout.
