Dominates Early Boxing; Albarano, Gross Triumph for State SYRACUSE, N.Y., March 10.— Syracuse, defending champion and pre-meet favorite, advanced four men into the semi-finals and one into the finals of the Eastern Intercollegiate Boxing Association tournament,•but John Albarano, Penn State's 135-pound sophomore sensation scored a 30-second technical knockout to advance into to night's finals. Frank Gross, another sophomore, boxed his way into this after noon's semi-finals, while . two Lions, 125-pounder John Hanby and 155-pound Lou . Koszarek dropped decisions. ' The semi-finals will be broad cast over WMAJ beginning at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. The finals will be aired begin ning at 8:20 p.m. George Kertelien, 175, Syra cuse, decisioned Penn State's Jack Bolger in the last fight of the night. Three other Penn State' mitt me n , including heavyweight champion Chuck Drazenovich, drew byes from the first round of competition. Also free , from first-round action were Harry Papacharalambous, 135, and Paul Smith, 165. It took Albarano only 30 sec onds to pound his way into to night's final with Tim Curley, Syracuse's 1949 145-pound champ ion- who is now campaigning in the 135-pound division. Albarano sent Catholic U's Joe IncarnatO to the canvas with a short left hook and a right uppercut to the jaw early in the first round. Ref eree Henry Lamar stepped in and stopped the bout after 30 seconds. Gross fought a slow battle, but managed to outpoint Larry Lu cas, Army, to move into today's 145-pound semi-finals. Gross will face Western Maryland's Harry Lafue, whom he defeated in dual meet competition. Both boys were cautious, but Gross was given points for his aggressiveness against his taller opponent. Unable to get in close, Gross was forced to fire at long range. Jim Huba, Syracuse, reversed a decision Hanby gained over him in a dual meet earlier this season by virtue of two good rounds. Huba opened the first round .with two hard lefts to the head and in the second period hit Hanby with a hard, left and a stinging right to the face. Huba will face Leonard Coiner, Virginia, in one of to day!s 125-pound semi-finals. Joe Miragliotta, Virginia cap tain who last week drew• with Koszarek, jabbed - his way to vic tory over the hard-hitting sopho more in a 155-pound battle. Kos zarek rallied in 'the final round, but the Virginian had piled up too much of a lead in the early frames. One of four defending champ ions entered in the tournament, Drezenovich will face the winner of the bout between Western Maryland's Joe Carloto and Ca tholic U's Gene Higgins in one of this afternoon's semi-finals. The other semi-finalists are Marty Cranden, Syracuse's NC AA heavyweight champ io n, an d Army's Bill Kellum.
