Sorority Parties Begin;
Open Final Rushing Week
The first set of sorority parties last night' began the final week
of formal rushing that will be climaxed with the formal coffee hours
Saturday afternoon.
• Parties for the rushees were given last night and will be held
Wednesday night by the following sororities: Alpha Chi Omega,
Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Chi Oniega, Delta Delta
Delta, Delta Zeta, Kappa Alpha
Theta, Sigma Delta Tau, and
Theta Phi Alpha.
Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Xi
Delta, Beta Sigma Omicron, Delta
Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Kap
pa Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta,
Phi Mu, Phi Sigma Sigma, and
Zeta Tau Alpha will be hostesses
for informal parties tonight and
Thursday evening in the sorority
suites. •
Several pertinent points should
be stressed to ease the confusion
of rushing and use of the Pan
hellenic post office, advisors to
Panhel, stated.

Debating Tryouts
Held for.. Women
• Tryouts for sophomore, junior,
and senior women interested in
debate will be held tonight at
6:30 ~p.m. in 2 Sparks, Coach
Clayton Schur announced yes-
terday.
Freshmen women who wish to
schedule debate will :be eligible
for the squad without trying out
and: Should report to 2 Sparks
tomorrow night at 6:30.
Students may receive one to
three credits for debate. Classes
are• held Tuesday and Wednes
day evenings from 7 to 10 p.m.

Schleicher—Rothman
The engagement of Laura
Schleicher, Nanticoke, to Murray
Rothman has beeen announced.
Miss Schleicher was graduated
from Wilkes College, Wilkes-
Barre, and is now employed by
the General Motors Acceptance
Corporation.
Mr. Rothman is a senior at
the College in psychology and
a member of Alpha Epsilon PI
fraternity.
Hurst—Cherashore
Sara Jane Cherashore has an
nounced her engagement to Ed
ward Hurst of Philadelphia. Miss
Cherashore, who is from Phila
delphia, was graduated from the
College in journalism. She is a
member of Sigma Delta Tau and
was active in Thespians.
Mr. Hurst has been working
at the .radio station, WPEINt, in
Philadelphia.
Carruthers—Ryman
The engagement of JoAnn
Ryman to Donald Carruthers, Jr.,
has been announced. Miss Ryman
is a junior in physical education.
Mr. Carruthers, who is a junior
in liberal arts, is a member of
Phi Delta Thqa.
Kagan—Gittleman
Mr. and Mrs. Laizie Gittle
man of Philadelphia announce
the engagement of their daugh
ter, Gloria to Robert Kagan of
New York City.
Miss Gittleman was graduated
from the College last semester.
She is a member of Sigma Delta
Tau and the promotion staff of
Froth.
Kagan, a member of PI Lamb
da Phi' fraternity, was graduated
in 1948. He •is •now attending
Yale University.
Koser—Funke
The engagement of Ellen
Funke, personel assistant in the
Employment Division of the Col
lege, to Robert Koser, Jr. has
recently been announced. Miss
Funke is a graduate of Swarth
more.
Koser, who was graduated
from the College in .1948, •is as
sistant chief recorder. •He is a
member of Phi Delta Theta fra
ternity.
Soph Team Looms
As Potential Victor
In IM Basketball
Sophomores loom as the poten
tial victors in women's interclass
basketball competition played on
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thurs
day of last week and last night
of this week, as their team won
three out of three in .the initial
patties.
The junior team has secured
two viUories; the freshmen, one;
and seniors, none.
In games last Tuesday night
the juniors swamped , the senior
team with a 36-16 victory. Jo-
Ann Hoy led the victors with 15
points followed by Evelyn Len
in& who tallied 12 points.
Sophs Win
On the same night the sopho
mores won their first game by
defeating the freshmen 21-16.
Highest scorer in this fray was
Ann Miller who tallied 11 points
for•' the losing freshmen.. Jeanine
Howell led the sophomores with
9 points.
On Wednesday the sophomores
won their second game in con
quering the senior team. Lillie
Fretz threw in 9 points as high
scorer for the winning sopho
mores.
A second victory for the ju
niors was 'recorded Wednesday
evening in a 31-19 fray against
the., freshmen. Helen Griffin
paced the victors with 13 points'
followed closely by Laning with
11 and Casandra Caraway with
10 for the losers.
Third Win
In Thursday's night compe
tition the sophomores• garnered
their third win, defeating the
juniors 25-18. High scorers for
the two' teams were Fretz -with
12 points for the ' winners and
Hoy with' 10 for the losers. First
win for the freshmen was record-
ed by means of a forfeit from
the seniors.
Last night's competition was
the last in interclass games. Be
ginning tonight and continuing
through tomorrow and Thursday
of this week, Army-Navy rival
ry will have pre-dominance.
Girls participating in this are
selected on the basis of their
playing throughout the basket
ball season.

Mac Allister Hall and Simmons won the intramural swimming
contest tying for first place with a total of 86 points. Closely follow
ing the leaders were Ath NE with 84, Ath SE with 80 and Kappa
Gamma, 72.
With 66 points Kappa Alpha Theta lead the second five follow
ed by Leonides, 59, Alpha Chi Omega, 57, Phi Mu, 52, and Co-op, 44 1 / 2 .

36; Ath SW, 31; Women's Build
ing, 26; Gamma Phi Beta, 24;

Jan Herd, Ath SE, recorded the
best times in two events, 50 yard
free style.and 25 yard back crawl
and fourth in the 25 yard breast.
Ath NE's swimmer, Barbara
Benck placed first in the 25 yard
breast and third in the 25 yard
back crawl.

Theta, Nancy Jarden, Simmons,

Siesel, Simmons placed in that
order for best times in the 50
yard free style.

placed second and third in the 25
yard breast. Places in the 25 yard
back crawl were recorded by Vir
ginia Mayes, Lou Shephard arid
Pat Veil.
Simmons set the best record
for the 100 yard free style relay
followed by Leonides, Kappa Al
pra Theta, Ath NE and Ath SE.

The marriage of Miss Doris
Kaplan, of Philadelphia, and
Bernard Gidding of Wildwood,
N. J., has been announced. Mrs.
Gidding, a member of Sigma Del
ta Tau sorority, was formerly
enrolled in the School of Liber
al Arts at the College.
Barnett—Yundt
The marriage of Miss Joyce
Yundt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Yundt, of Lakemont, Al
toona, and Robert Barnett, of
Claysburg, took place at the
Lakemont Church of God on
February 4.
Mrs. Barnett is a senior in
psychology at the College, and
the bridegroom was graduated
on February. 7. He is now adver
tising sales and service manager
with a Pittsburgh paper.
