Draz Knocks Out Crandall
As Lions, Orange Tie 4-4

Boxers Prepare For Army
Chuck Drazenovich, Penn State's dynamite punching heavy
weight, now has his mitts focused toward a national title after
knocking out the reigning NCAA boxing kingpin, Marty Crandell
•last Saturday night.
By sending the Syracuse heavy to the canvass in the closing
seconds of the final round, the hulking Draz earned his teammates
a 4-4 stalemate against the visitors, the defending Eastern boxing
•
champions.

partisan fans screamed with ap
proval as Chuck decisevely de
feated his opponent.
Previous to the jet-rocket-like
right, which spelled lights-out for
Crandell, the Draz had thrown
everything in the book at his op
ponent.
In the opening round he bom
barded his midsection, in the
middle round he concentrated on
Crandell's face with a flurry of
left jabs and then . . .

the best, advantage, 'in copping
his 125-pound bout. Light-heavy
Jack Bolger was Penn State's
other point getter, earning a clear
cut decision against Jack Maher,
a game but inexperienced con
testant.
The Lions have now settled
down(lto serious workouts in an
ticipation of this Saturday's meet
against Army at West Point.
Earlier this year, Syracuse drop

Lose 3 Tilts
Penn State will gird itself for
three consecutive Rec Hall
Basketball tilts in the next
week-and-one-half following a
3-game Easterh jaunt in which
they sustained a "Lost Week
end."
Riding the crest of ' a 5-game
winning streak, the Lions found
the pickings up East mighty
slim as they lost to Penn, on
Thursday, 66 to 49; Gettysburg,
Friday, 66 to 65 (in an extra
period) and NaVy, .46 to 40, Sat
urday night.
As a result of the. three drub
bings the Nittany slate now
shows a season's mark of nine
wins against seven losses. To
morrow, the Lions will' face West
Virginia's Mountaineers follow
ed by Rutgers on Saturday and
Temple next Wednesday.
RECORD NEAR FALLING
However negligible the week
end did accomplish something
noteworthy. Marty Costa crept
to within 40 points of establish
ing an unofficial Penn State in
dividual scoring record for one
season's play. Although no of
ficial records have been kept,
Jack Biery is credited with the
present high water mark of 260,
set in 1947-'4B.
Biery also holds the three
year high with 596 points but
that mark is in no imminent
danger •of falling.
.With seven
games remaining on Penn State's
schedule, Costq needs but a 5.4
average per game to tie Biery.
In, the three weekend games
the 6-foot 6-inch Lion co-captain
garnered 12 against Penn, 16
against Gettysburg and 13 with
Navy for an aggregate of 41, thus
maintaining a 16-game average
of 13.1.
Despite Lee Schisler's 21_
point effort against Gettysburg,
a layup shot by Warren Watson
with only 45 seconds of play
remaining gave the Bullets a 66
to 65 win over the Nittany team
(its -second overtime defeat this
year.) Previdusly the Lions bow
ed, to Colgate 68 to 67 in an
extra-period match.'

Bullets' All-State 16-point per
game man was held to 6 count

Three one-point losSes in the lighter weights cost Penn State's
wrestlers their first loss of the season Saturday afternoon in Rec Hall.
The Nittanies• bowed to the superior team strength of Syracuses'
Eastern champs by an 18-8 score.
The final tally, however,.did \ not indicate the close battles in the
individual bouts. The Orangemen's three defending EIWA titlists—
Ken Hunte, Pas Perri and George
Gebhardt—came through at their
particular weightS, but not as
easily as many had expected.
This week the Nittanies travel
to West Point, N. Y., to battle
with Army's Black Knights. The
Cadets, like the Lions, have
dropped but one meet this year.
Their loss also came atthe hands
of Syracuse, 22-8.
HUNTE SURPRISED
Hunte, EIWA 155-pound cham
pion and NCAA runner-up, was
surprised by the Lions' Cec Irvin
for almost a period and' a half
before , he finally piled up
cnough points to win. Hunte got
the initial takedown but was
quickly reversed by the leg-wise
Irvin, who remained on top for
the remainder of the period.
Hunte got a reverse, a near-fall
and two minutes' time advantage
to win by 8-2.
Perri,
,Syracuse 165-pounder,
and Gebhardt, voted .the out
standing wrestler in the 1949
Easterns, broke winning streaks
compiled by Bill Santel and
Mike Rubino to triumph. Perri
lecisioned Santel, 7-0, in a good
bout, while Gebhardt got two
takedowns and an escape to
edge Rubino ,in the 175-pound
class, 5-3.

Bob Valle, 9-8. Waters tallied
four points in a hectic third
frame.
Experienced Joe Settanni put
the first blotch on Don Maurey's
collegiate record by gaining a
5-4 win from the previously un
beaten Nittany. The 136-pound
Maurey led Settanni, 4-3, with
fifteen seconds left in . the bout,
but Settanni- fashioned a spec
tacular takedown. seconds be
fore the bell rang to gain the
nod.

Captain Jini Maurey and Hom
er Barr,. "The People's Choice,"
tallied the Lions' only points.
Captain Jim ran up a 9-1 score
on bicycling John Haas, but
couldn't catch the Syracusian
long enough to pin him in the
145-pound clash. Barr, Eastern
heavyweight king, won his 12th
straight dual meet by flattening
footballer Pete George in 5:06.
Barr experienced some trouble
in . getting newcomer George off
his stomach,b ut caught him with
a wristlock and half nelson in
the second period. •
