I’AGE FOUR Jeffrey men Down Navy , Extend Win Streak to Four Avenge Lane '4B Loss; Lawroski Game's Star After successful scuttling a fighting Navy soccer crew by a 3-0 count on Saturday, Coach Bill Jeffrey is grooming bis all victorious charges for their fifth straight triumph of the season when they tackle Colgate this weekend. It was a revengeful horde of Nittany hooters which ran the Midshipmen into the ground with their devastating attack, and at the same time the win avenged last season’s lone loss, which came at the Middies’ hands. The victory also brought to eleven the Lions’ string of games without defeat over a two-year span Harry Lawroski, a booter who started his first contest for the Lions, proved to be a mighty han dy man to have around and he personally saw to it that the Navy was scuttled. Replacing the ailing star for ward, Ron Coleman, Lawroski tal lied twice, once in the first period and then- again in the final canto, to lead the Blue and White to its fourth consecutive win of the year. LAWROSKI, Lawroski, a chemical engineer ing major with a 2.8 average, was never better. As was the' case a year ago, the Lions were favored to beat Navy, but last season the Midshipmen routed the Nittanymen and again Saturday it seemed like a possible ;Navy win was in the making when Coleman was unable to play be cause of an injured ankle. Coach Jeffrey gambled—his ef forts were well rewarded when Lawroski, with twelve minutes of the game gone, scored the first -goai. Harry Little, another diminutive soccer warrior, who was named to All-America honorable mention last season, came through with a long shot to pad the Lions’ lead. To add to the insult, Lawroski again found the payzone in the final period for the shutout win. FULLBACKS For the first time this season the Lions were faced with a strong offense, as’Navy continually pene trated into the Blue and White danger zone, but because of the efforts of a duet,of hulking full backs, Chuck Margolf and Bill Yerkes, the Lion goal was never scored upon. In this day of two platoon sys tems Jeffrey pulled quite a sur prising stunt when he allowed nearly all his starters to play the entire' 88 minutes. Lawroski, who was ably spelled by Spence Boyer for a few mo ments, was the only substitute to see action in the entire fracas. Bud Fenton, center forward, tallied the lone Lion goal in 9:20 ot the first period. In the second period Frostburg’s Wenner brought his team from behind by scoring a goal in 15:27. Ken Hos terman piloted the Penn State team. 95 Opponents Since they started playing in tercollegiate . football back in 1896, Michigan State’s Spartans have met 95 different teams on the gridiron. They have played a total of 425 games, winning 251,, ’osing 144 and tying 30. Still Winning BILL JEFFREY JV's Triumph; Win First, 19-7 Improvement and the makings of a polished team were in evi dence as the Nittany jayvee’s re corded their first conquest of the season, downing a scrappy team from Lock Hriven, 19-7, at Beaver Field Saturday. Late in the first quarter, half back Emory McCourt passed to end Bill Barber for the first score, and from the second half kickoff, the Lions began to roll. McCourt went around left end in the third period, but Lock Ha ven countered in the fourth quar ter to make the score 12-7. Barber was on the receiving end of an aerial from Jim Pollard for the final score, Phil Klocek convert ing. Scoring by the Nittanies may have reached greater heights, but over-anxious hands accounted for the incompletion of several passes that might, have' gone all the way. Coach Bill Gutteron will con centrate on brushing-up on offen sive plays and working on the tim ing of the pass receivers this week in preparation for the team’s next game with Syracuse on October 28, at Beaver Field. , Wrestling Notice Wrestling Coach, Charles Spei del requests all those interested in trying for a post on the 1949 squad report to the mats in Rec reation Hall after 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, or'Thursday. .
