Comments to the effect that these hats are freshmen dinks or worn to indicate freshmen girls who have erred have been over heard. In , reality the hats signify girls who have been outstanding for their scholarship, leadership, and character. Although the campus 'has three such organizations for women, Mortar Board, Chimes, an d Cwens, which choose their mem bers on this basis, Cwens and Chimes are the two which wear hats as a distinguishing symbol. Although Mortar • Board is a member of Hat Societies Council, which is composed of all campus honoraries for both men and women, its members wear no evi dent mark to designate their group 'as an honorary organiza tion with the exception of the pin, a small replica of a Mortar Board. All Chimes and Cwens, includ ing active and inactive members, are entitled to wear a hat. Both honoraries' chapeaus are grey with their respective symbol on For LUNCH It's FRED'S RESTAURANT Tired, Registrants? Freshman women may have ten o'clock permissions for the rest of the period, which includes today, tomorrow, Sunday, Mon day and Tuesday nights. WSGA's regulation prohibiting association with men will not take effect . until next Wednesday. , when classes begin. Freshman women, however, are required. to attend the football game on Saturday without escorts. In addition . they may not go to fraternity houses. Sophomores, juniors and sen iors will observe regular hours during the weekend. This in cludes oneo'elock permissions to night and s tomorrow night. Alpha Lambda Delta, national freshmen women's honorary, choses its members solely on scholarship. It, however, does not belong to Hat Societies Coun cil. Wednesday of each week is set aside by the Council as the day hats are to be worn by all "hat" honoraries. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1949 e• • • Corner By Commis Keller An old time situation is some what reversed as approximately 1200 new women students have enrolled at the College and only a slight number over 600 old timers are here to make them feel at home. Cwens, Chimesi . Mortar Board and Alpha Lambda Delta have done their best in orientating these new coeds to campus life at the College, however, that pe culiar and satisfying personal welcome and interest, ,which can mean so much to a new. student in completely adjusting herself, may very well be missing. Big-Little Sisters In setting up the Big Sister- Little .Sister - system, WSGA hoped to devise a plan whereby this personal interest could. be supplied. • Past examples% Of the 'system have shown it to be' sus- . ceptible to defeat. That defeat is not, • however, a necessary evil of the system. Rather it is a lack of true interest on the part of Col lege women to recognize a worth while tradition and a further lack on their part in fulfilling their obligations. Bigger Challenge The challenge is far bigger/this year than ever before. Most co eds , have been - assigned two little sis ters• and the task' has become doubly hard. Doubly hard if visit ing, giving needed advice, a little friendly companionship and cheerful company can be classi fied that' way., Coeds had a chance .to release themselves from, accepting a little sister by signing in . the . dean of women's office last, year if , they did not care to have one- or .were for - some reason unable , to have one. Most, in the College spirit, accepted.. The , : .acceptance:.and challenge , are still those , of-.the old timers.
