The observa tories will be operated under the direction of Joseph Vrabel, of the Department of Physics. The summer program follows: Week beginning June 29, Saturn and its rings and moons and the Earth’s moon; July 6, double stars, star clusters, and Saturn and its rings and moons; July 13, nebulae and double stars; July 20, milky way, nebulae, Jupiter and its moons; July 27, Jupiter and its moons and the Earth’s moon. The two observatories were built on the campus in 1939-40 and were the gift of the Class of 1938. Principal purpose of the con ference, which is sponsored jointly by Penn State and the Geophysical Research Director ate of the U. S. Air Force, is to acquaint scientists in the field with the latest theoretical and experimental developments in ionospheric research—particular ly at frequencies below the broadcast level. Experimental and theoretical analyses of radio propagation at very low frequencies have been neglected by scientists over the years because of the magnitude of the instrumentation required. For similar reasons the exploita tion of the very high frequency radar regions was delayed until the pressure of war showed them to be useful. During the war, the develop ment of long range navigational equipment, such as Loran, by Note Room Use Reservations Mrs. Naomi Haupt, secretary of the Central Booking Office, re cently announced that all rooms in campus buildings to be used for extra activities, entertainment, or recreational purposes must be re served 24 hours in advance. This information was released for the benefit of new or visiting instructors to the campus. The ruling is necessary to prevent du plication of meeting places and to meet fire and safety regula tions. It applies to picnics in Hort Woods as well as to parties or dances in the TUB or any other campus building. Groups or instructors desiring to make such reservations after 5 p.m. weekdays or on Saturday afternoon or Sunday may do so through the Central Booking Of fice, 320 Old Main. During regu lar class hours reservations maybe made through Ray V. MONDAY, JUNE 27, 1949 British and American scientists pointed out the value of the low frequency spectrum to precise navigational and control services. Accordingly, post-war research efforts are actively being directed toward the exploitation of this low frequency region. In order to study the transmis sion properties of these radio waves, certain experimental and theoretical analyses of the effect of the ionosphere at these fre quencies must be made. Working with the U. S. Air Force, the Pennsylvania State College has recently formed a new laboratory group, known as the Radio Propagation Labora tory. The group combines the re search efforts of two older re search units, the lonosphere Studies Group and the Long Wave Propagation Group. It is believed to represent the largest group of scientists working in the low frequency region. __ CLASSIFIEDS AH eUaalfied advertisement. must be placed before t p.m. on Tuesdays preceding leene.
