Lion Trackmen Triumph
Over Colgate Runners
Lancaster, Gehrdes, Freebairn
Excell in Hamilton Meet
Winning 10 of 14 events, the Penn State track team over
whelmed Colgate Saturday on the loser's home grounds. This was
the Lions’ last meet' prior'to this weekend's battle with one of the
top cinder teams in the nation. Michigan State.
The Wernermen, rolling up 86 1/3 points to the Red Raiders'
39 2-3, were sparked to victory by
Jim Gehrdes in the 220 low hur
dles.
GEHRDES
Gehrdes, in his only start of the
day, sped over the 220-yard low
hurdles in 22.9 seconds, clipping
three-tenths of a second from the
record which he set himself last
year. Jim was followed by George
K'ine of Penn State and Garrett
McCandles of Colgate.
Gehrdes’ deed overshadowed
the outstanding performances
turned in by Wil Lancaster in the
100-yard dash and the distance
men who swept every position in
the 880-yard, the mile and two
mile runs.
DASH
Lancaster turned in what was
probably the best race of his life
in winning the century in 9.8 sec
onds. He was followed by Cap
tain Jack Schulze of Colgate, who
closed fast, and George Thomas
of Penn State.
Despite the absence of ace dis
tance man Horace Ashenfe'ter, the
Lion runners proved to be too
much for the Colgate thinclads.
Coach Werner's lads took all the
laurels in the distance division.
In the 880-yard run, Paul Koch
crossed the finish line first, fol
lowed by Bob Auman and Jack
Stevenson. Bob Parsons, John
Bates and John St. Clair finished
in that order in the mi'e run. The
two mile contest was captured by
Bob Freebairn, who continues to
improve with each meet. Bob
was followed across the line by
Bill Ashenfelter and A 1 Porto.
BROAD JUMP
The Lions also chalked up wins
in the broad jump, the pole vault,
the jave>in and the 440-yard run.
Bill Reynolds took the title in the
broad jump with a leap of 21 feet
while Ron Coder and Merle Sie
ber tied for top honors in the
pole vault.
Larry Gerwig won the javelin
for the second time in two meets
with a toss of 165 feet 2 inches.
Bill Lockhart took the crown in
the 440-yard run, traveUng the
distance in 51 seconds.

gave Lambda Chi Alpha the nod
over A.T.O.
Delta Upsilon gained the quar
ter-finals and the semi-finals at
the same time last Friday after
noon by blanking Phi Sigma
Kappa, 3-0.
When Alpha Chi Rho and Beta
Theta Pi both failed to show up
for their scheduled game, it was
declared no contest, and a double
forfeit. This deprived the D.U.’s
of a quarter-final opponent, and
moved them into the semi-finals.
All the scoring in the D.U. vs.
Phi Sigma Kappa game was done
in the first period. Lane booted
in two goals and Papachazalam
bois one.
Four victories were eked out
in intramural soccer play last
