IT. WAT 8. V Lingnan Prof Tells Conditions A glimpse of conditions in war torn China was given by Richard E. Pride, on the faculty of Ling nan University, Canton, in a let ter written in March and just re ceived by friends at the College. Pride, who with his wife Mar tha, went to China in 1947 to .continue the agricultural work carried on by G. W. “Daddy” Groff since 1911, explains that Lingnan is now host to about 400 guest students who have transfer red from the North. He states that two new semi-permanent dormi tories have been built to help in housing them. “We seem to be’ making out very well,” he said. “We have also gained a good many well-qualified teachers who are also refugees from the North,” Pride explains, “A few letters are now coming out of the North and maybe some of you will soon be seeing the new postage stamp bearing the por trait of Mao Tsx Tung,” Pride continued. “Our own status has chang ed but little. Continuous fluctua tions in the currency and a gradu al basic rise in the cost of living make shopping a game,” Pride writes. “Canton, as you know, has been the capitol off and on for weeks and I think is not at toe present though many people and departments are here.” Commenting on news releases about conditions there, Pride says conditions are bad but some news stories are a bit too-highly col ored.
