Nittany Golfers Open Season
With Home Win Over Bisons
With perfect weather helping to open the Nittany golfers' home
lesson yesterday, the Lions made it two in a row by tagging a seven
to two defeat on the Bucknell squad.
Playing in familiar surroundings, the varsity lost only one point
by way of individual defeat, that being on Jim Yerkes' loss to Fred
Cholewinski, 4 and 3. The re
maining Lion golfers pounded out
wins in individual competition.
Playing by last 'season's rule of
having three foursomes with a
total of three points to a group,
the Lion linkamen took five indi
vidual and two best ball points
for their total. One best ball
point added to their lon e singles
victory gave the Bisons their
scoring for the day.
In the first foursome, Captain
Joe Boyle downed Bill Allen of
Bucknell, 6 and 4, and Tom Smith
defeated Bison Don Montgomery
one-up. Besides giving Bucknell
their only victory, the second
doubles produced a Penn State
win as George Mazanowski won
over Harry Cholewinski, 3 and
2. In the final foursome Marvin
Goldenberg beat Russ Long, 4
and 3, and Bob Kunkle edged Don
Thomas, 3 and 2.
The win yesterday brought the
varsity's pre-league record to two
wins against one defeat. The
Lions meet two more warm-up
opponents before Eastern Inter
collegiate play-offs next week.
Coach Rutherford's men will play
Colgate Saturday and Gettysburg
early next week, both on 'the
Nittany course. All the league
matches are to be played at home,
also.
