THURSDAY, APRIL 21, 1949 Lion Lacrossemen Return Home; Southern Tour Nets 3 Wins, 1 Loss A crazily bouncing shot past the outstretched stick of Goalie John Nehoda in the final two minutes of play deprived Penn State of its fourth consecutive road trip lacrosse victory against Virginia Wednesday night by an 8-7 count. All totaled the Nittany Lion stickwielders came out of their four-game eight-day Southern sojourn with a bill of three wins against a single loss. Coach Nick Thiel, hoping to duplicate the 1948 feat when State copped its first five games, saw his veteran proteges run over Penn, 9-3, Western Mary land, 14-5, and Washington and Lee, 9-4, before faltering before the Cavaliers. STANDOUTS Standout performers on the at tack for the Thielmen were Buddy Thomas and Ed Belfleld. Both athletes fed well, with Thomas topping the State scorers with ten goals and four assists. Belfield scored four times in ad dition to handing out six assists. Thomas' peak came against West ern Maryland when he countered four tallies. On the defense Dean Kissell and Tom Smith turned in bril liant performances, collaborating in bottling up All-Americans Tongue, of Washington and Lee, and Hooper, of Virginia. Swarthmore and Penn fell before the potent Lion bats, while the Temple encounter was cancelled at the end of the first inning with the Owls in front by 1-0. Newcomer Bill Bair turned in a sparkling performance on the mound as the Bedenk charges swept past Swarthmore's nine by a 10-1 count Thursday. Bair allowed only five hits while fanning five and issuing two free tickets. The lone run was tallied against him in the eighth inning when a singl e and a triple accounted for the marker.
