Fourteen members of Alpha
Delta Sigma, men's national ad
vertising honorary, will go on a
field trip to Philadelphia next
week. The trip, an annual af
fair, will begin on Tuesday, April
.19, and end Thursday, April 21.
Plans have been made to visit
the N. W. Ayer advertising ag
ency, Curtis Publishing Co.,
radio station WPEN, the Phila
delhpia Evening Bulletin, Beck
Engraving Co., and McCandish
Lithograph Corp. A luncheon
date with alumni of the Phila
delphia-Penn State chapter is al
so scheduled.

To Speak Here
Alice Parker Tallmadge, state
president of the American Asso
ciation of University Women,
will be the speaker at the AAUW
dinner to be held Wednesday,
April 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Nit
tany Lion Inn, State College.
Mrs. Tallrnadge, who is head
of the department of classics and
assistant professor of Greek and
Latin at Cedar Crest College,
will speak on AAUW work in
Pennsylvania and on plans for
the national convention at
Seattle in June.
Mrs. A. K. Anderson, presi
dent of the State College branch,
will also give a resume of this
year's work, and three new offi
cers will be elected—president,
corresponding secretary, an d
treasurer.
The committee in charge of the

Weatherman Saves
Winter Coal Supply
If you still have a part of the
coal pile left by the furnace, you
can thank the weather man.
R. Y. Sigworth, supervisor of
utilities at the College, points out
that statistics on temperatures at
the College indicate that you
should have saved 13.2 per cent
in fuel during the year preceed
ing March 31, 1949, as compared
to the average for the 12 pre
vious years.
The only colder-than-average
weather during the winter came
in October when fuel consump
tion should have been 17.5 per
cent above the average for the
past 12 years.
Savings affected during other
months should have been 23.3
per cent in November; 4.3 per
cent for December; 20.5 per tent
for January; 25.2 per cent for
February; and 11.6 per cent for
Marsh.
Sigworth determines the sav
ings by maintaining a record of
degree days.
A degree day, Sigworth ex
plains, is determined by taking
the average temperature for the
day and subtracting it from 65,
the temperature at which no
heat should be necessary. This
daily figure is totaled to deter
mine the number of degree days
for the month.
