got a new Secretary of Defense
yesterday who promised to make
the country secure by discourag
ing any potential aggressor. Lou
is Johnson, sworn in at an elabor
ati ceremony in Washington, told
a crowd of 15,000 that the defense
job we have is not of our own
choosing. He said it has been
thrust on America by the ten
sion of the world today.

WASHINGTON—Senate-House
conferees have agreed on a rent
control bill with a phrase calling
for a "fair net operating income"
for landlords. It extends controls
for 15 months and maintains the
"home rule" clause. Senator
John Sparkman of Alabama, pre
dicts that both the senate and the
house will approve the compro
mise measure by tonight.
